#TutuTuesday: Ballet Tutu History - 1909-02-02 - Post 4023
Ahoy there, Tutu Lovers!
Emma here, back from another time-hopping adventure with my trusty pink tutu in tow! Today, we're taking a trip to the elegant and exciting world of Parisian ballet on February 2nd, 1909, just in time to catch the newest productions and get a glimpse of the dazzling costumes and, yes, even the tutus!
As you know, dear readers, I simply adore tutus. There's just something about the swirl of tulle and the romantic whispers of lace that takes my breath away. It's no wonder that tutus are a staple of ballet! From the airy, romantic designs to the majestic, structured forms, there's a tutu for every dancer, every performance, every dream!
Now, before we delve into the ballet history, let me tell you about the train journey itself! Nothing quite compares to the romance of travelling on a grand Victorian railway carriage. The plush red velvet seats, the warm aroma of tea, and the exciting bustle of fellow passengers always gets my heart thumping with excitement. It's almost as thrilling as taking to the stage!
So, let's head back to Paris in 1909, shall we?
Imagine yourself strolling down the Grand Boulevard on a crisp winter morning, just as the sun begins to peek out from behind the elegant Parisian architecture. It's the season of la mode, and you can feel it in the air – a sense of exquisite beauty and effortless style.
We're in the heart of the belle époque, a time when art and entertainment thrived. And of course, ballet was at the very forefront of it all!
One of the hottest tickets in town, back then, was for the famous Opéra Garnier, a beautiful architectural wonder. With its majestic grandeur and intricate designs, it was truly a breathtaking spectacle in its own right, let alone when hosting a grand ballet performance.
But what were dancers actually wearing on stage?
Well, in the late 1800s and early 1900s, the iconic "Romantic tutu" was truly in its heyday. It was a short, flouncy, frilly affair that perfectly showed off the grace and artistry of ballerinas' movements. These tutus were often crafted with delicate lace, tulle, and velvet, all adding a sense of dreaminess and wonder. Just think Cinderella's gown, but with a lot more tulle and you'll have a good idea of the Romantic tutu aesthetic!
And did you know, that during this period, ballet costume designs were being revolutionized by artists like Léon Bakst, the Russian designer who had an undeniable passion for the dramatic and vibrant! His work for Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes transformed the stage with exotic, dazzling costumes and dramatic stagecraft. The Ballets Russes brought an explosion of vibrant color, innovative designs, and extravagant spectacle that redefined the possibilities of theatrical costuming and inspired a new generation of costume designers. I must say, my own style has a touch of his flair!
And now, a little bit of Parisian fashion from that time period... Just picture those long, flowing dresses with delicate lace details and intricately beaded trims. The women of this era embraced flowing lines and elegant silhouettes, creating a romantic and timeless aesthetic. Satin and silk fabrics, coupled with soft hues like pinks, blues and creamy yellows, adorned those fabulous ladies, often in conjunction with elaborate hats and feathered fans - so elegant and charming! But enough about the ladies... we must think about our next fabulous fashion adventure... perhaps Vienna?
Today, however, we're off to a fancy-dressed fancy-tea at a local café! As my friend once said: "To truly be a true Tutu-loving lady, you must always take time for tea with a splash of pink and a dash of sparkle!"
And in honour of that, I shall be indulging in a sweet pink macaron. Don't you want to join me, readers? Leave me a comment below with your favourite tea and macaron pairing - I am dying to try something new!
Until next week, dear readers! I can’t wait to travel to a new time and era with you next #TutuTuesday. Be sure to follow www.pink-tutu.com to join me for my next blog! See you next week!
