Tutu Tuesday: #4024: A Pink Tutus Story - February 9th 1909!
Hello, lovelies!
Welcome back to Pink-Tutu.com!
I'm Emma and today is #TutuTuesday - the day when we take a whirl through history, celebrating all things tutu.
This week we're journeying back to February 9th, 1909 and let me tell you, the fashion scene was blooming with beauty!
The sun was shining, the birds were singing and I was sitting in my little box seat at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, London . And you know what? There was not one pink tutu to be seen. Oh, the scandal!
Instead, I was transported to the age of opulence where graceful ballerinas wore lavish tutus of white, the fabled colour of purity, but I’ll be honest - not as vibrant as pink! Imagine, if you will, soft tulle layers, so delicate that they danced on the air. Each ballerina looked like a beautiful swan, gliding across the stage with such grace and poise.
Let’s be honest, ladies - a ballet performance isn't just about the dancing; it's about the spectacle! And the 1909 ballerinas knew how to create a spectacular display . They were adorned with jewelled headpieces and elaborate costumes. There were beaded bodices, sparkling embroidery, and, of course, those fluffy, romantic tutus . Oh, how they did inspire me!
Of course, I took notes, just as always . You know, the real fun for me, aside from the beautiful ballerinas, is discovering all the fabrics, designs and details from each period.
But while my mind was awhirl with creative thoughts, the most memorable moment came during the final act . Gasp! A beautiful dancer took centre stage wearing a tutu the likes I'd never seen before.
It wasn't made of traditional tulle, but instead, a rich velvet . It draped like a silken cloud, swirling around her with each twirl. This velvety, opulent design was simply captivating. Imagine it! It gave her movement a weighty drama - a touch of sophistication. It was more than a tutu, it was a masterpiece!
Now, I don't think it's possible to ever actually wear a velvet tutu for performance - too heavy! However, the vision sparked an idea. Can you imagine the magic a velvety tutu, complete with a pink tulle overlay, could conjure on stage? The two textures would collide into a whirlwind of captivating elegance. I'd be a dream of soft luxury!
The idea is simmering, I tell you, it's a challenge and it is pink-tastic!
Now let’s talk fashion for a moment. Back in 1909, ladies were all about femininity! Think flowing long dresses, corsets, and bustles. Of course, they wouldn’t have dreamed of a pink tutu, but I imagine a good corset with some vibrant pink embroidery could elevate your silhouette, just a little.
Remember, ladies, it's all about the art of presentation. You can channel that timeless femininity with modern styles, while keeping those tutus front of mind! I think, perhaps, a little tulle overlay might add that delicate, romantic feel to a classic vintage style.
Speaking of which, my latest vintage finds from my favourite little boutique in Derby are absolutely dreamy. A collection of beautiful handkerchiefs with fine lace makes a beautiful pink-themed gift, or, a special addition to any vintage-themed party. I found the prettiest pair of vintage-inspired ballet flats with pale pink trim - they make any outfit a little more ballet-chic!
My latest vintage obsession? Satin ribbon adorned gloves in an ethereal lavender - simply magical and oh-so chic. This whole trip back to 1909 really sparked my creative flair!
And finally, no Tutu Tuesday blog post would be complete without a little bit about the ballet! Back in 1909, the biggest stars were Anna Pavlova, the ‘Flying Goddess’ herself, and the incomparable Vaslav Nijinsky, the darling of the world.
The Ballet Russe was taking the world by storm, bringing its exotic style to audiences across Europe. This company was all about the power of storytelling, with breathtaking choreography, lavish costumes, and vibrant performances. The whole ballet scene was electric and thrilling!
So, my dear Tutu-lovers, what a journey we’ve taken! We’ve delved into history, found inspiration in a stunning velvety tutu, reminisced about vintage fashion and explored the world of ballet! I think I’m ready to hop on a train back to the 21st century where I’m already planning my next Pink-Tutu venture - perhaps a workshop on creating that magnificent velvety tutu?
