#TutuTuesday: A Peek into Ballet History - 1912-10-29
Hello, darlings! It’s Emma here, your very own tutu-clad time traveller, ready to whisk you back in time to explore the glorious history of the tutu, that iconic symbol of grace and beauty.
This week we're celebrating #TutuTuesday by journeying to 29th October, 1912. Today, we're waltzing through the glittering streets of Paris, the heart of the ballet world, where tutus are truly adored!
This era is known for its love of everything elaborate and whimsical - a perfect fit for the fluffy, ethereal tulle of the tutu.
(I must admit, my latest collection, 'La Parisienne,' features an elegant pale pink tutu with delicate lace trims inspired by this very time. You can find it on the *[link to pink-tutu.com] website! It's positively *delectable.)
But let's step back in time, shall we? In 1912, the dance world was abuzz with exciting premieres and the rise of some truly magnificent ballerinas.
What was happening on October 29th, 1912?
Well, my dears, you wouldn't believe this! A whole year ago, Le Sacre du Printemps (The Rite of Spring) had its chaotic debut in Paris! Imagine – a riotous, ground-breaking ballet that shocked audiences with its stark, innovative movements. Now, while it may have been shocking, that new choreography paved the way for even more exciting artistic expressions on the stage, which, in my opinion, is never a bad thing!
(Of course, it all comes down to finding the perfect tutu, but I digress!)
Speaking of ballet in Paris, one of the most renowned ballet companies at that time was the Ballets Russes, under the incredible direction of Serge Diaghilev. It was known for its revolutionary approach to dance and the exquisite costume designs – and you can bet those tutus were absolutely divine!
(In fact, I had the most wonderful time travelling to see Ballets Russes in 1913! I just had to see The Firebird, one of their most spectacular shows – all vibrant colors and a flamboyant storyline, it made me wish I could join the dancers! )
Now, when you think of Parisian tutus from this period, you have to imagine a whole galaxy of color! There were the classic romantic tutus, made of layers of white tulle and edged with delicate lace, so graceful and airy, they almost seemed to float on stage. But there was also an embrace of a bolder aesthetic, with designers using daring colors and intricate designs. It's no wonder the audience was mesmerized!
(My, oh my! Did I mention my latest Parisian pink tutu, my dear readers? It is positively made to evoke those elegant times! It has the same whimsical yet daring design elements without the outrageous color combinations.)
On October 29th, 1912, the tutu had become so ingrained in ballet that it was virtually impossible to imagine the performance without one. In fact, many people actually considered the tutu a crucial part of the art form, just as we do today! The ballet wouldn't be the same without its dramatic, graceful swirls and airy twirls!
(Speaking of "twirls", let's just have a quick talk about our favorite colour – PINK! My newest line of ballet shoes are inspired by the bright and happy feeling you get from dancing – there is something simply fabulous about the soft hue. If pink is your favorite color (which is everyone's, by the way), I recommend the pink ballerina shoes.)
Tutus became so symbolic, in fact, that even everyday clothing began to reflect its elegant shape. This era, in particular, was obsessed with all things feminine. You could find skirts reminiscent of a tutu in the streets of Paris, and even ladies’ daywear started incorporating hints of that whimsical, whirl-inducing design.
But let's talk fashion for a minute! If there’s one thing that always grabs my attention while time traveling, it's fashion! The 1910s, dear readers, were full of flair and fun, so be prepared to see amazing outfits everywhere.
Imagine the gorgeous S-shaped silhouettes of women’s day dresses - those are simply stunning, not to mention the beautiful wide-brimmed hats adorned with feathers, and the exquisite corsets that really highlight a woman's curves! It’s enough to inspire a whole line of tutu-inspired fashion!
(Speaking of inspiration, how about some pink inspiration for the week? We have our latest pink collection – all kinds of designs, but they're all inspired by our love of pink, naturally.)
As I look through the dusty archives of time, it's remarkable to see how the tutu has continuously evolved – with each change reflecting the fashion of its time! From the simple tutus of the 18th century to the full, dramatic tutus we see today, this timeless dance staple truly transcends decades, capturing the spirit and creativity of each generation.
And the future, my dears, is bright and sparkly for the tutu! The evolution continues, and it is a joyful journey we share together – in pink, of course.
Now, darlings, I simply have to jet off again! I’ll be in Moscow next, trying to get my hands on a vintage tutu – the design for my new 'Red Moscow' line, which you'll have to wait for. You know, sometimes, we must hold onto our secrets and make it a surprise!
Don’t forget to share your favorite tutus, fashion moments, and time travel stories with me! Remember, Pink-tutu.com is your space for all things delightful, and we’re just getting started!
Until next week, darlings, stay glamorous and fabulous, and always be prepared to twirl!
