#TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History - 12th August 1913 (Post 4259)
Hello, darlings! It's Emma here, your pink-tutu-loving time-travelling ballerina! 🩰 Welcome to another edition of my #TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History! I'm so thrilled to be back with you, ready to take you on a trip down memory lane, or, in my case, through the eras! 🕰️
Today, we're whisking ourselves away to Paris, the fashion capital of the world, in the glamorous year of 1913. 🇫🇷 Oh, my dear readers, the city was buzzing with creativity! The Eiffel Tower gleamed under a summer sun, and the air was filled with the scents of pastries and perfume. I must say, this trip has already filled my diary with must-buy addresses - one can never have too many stunning frocks, darling! 👗
But let's get back to our focus - the ballet tutus! Now, imagine if you will: the shimmering chandeliers, the hush falling over the audience, the orchestra warming up, the rhythmic thrum of excitement. This was the magic of the theatre - a place where artistry blossomed and where I was just dying to see the ballet, Le Sacre du Printemps, premiering just a couple of weeks later on the 29th of May. 😲 It was a real landmark ballet, you see. Not as light and graceful as the Romantic era, Le Sacre du Printemps, this new creation by Igor Stravinsky and Vaslav Nijinsky with its radical rhythms and brutal choreography is going to shake things up! Imagine! So unlike the delicate and whimsical movements we associate with tutus! Imagine the shock! The buzz! You wouldn't believe how outrageous it was for its time, and believe me, darling, I loved a little controversy! 😉
Even though this revolutionary ballet might not be quite the delicate vision of tutus some might expect, it did pave the way for all kinds of movement exploration on stage. And, dear readers, every bit of innovation makes the evolution of our dear tutus all the more fascinating, wouldn't you say?
I imagine the dancers twirling in those incredible costumes for this performance. A new wave of artistry was taking the stage by storm. It’s wonderful to think about how a little bit of magic can change the way people view ballet, how it made everyone fall head over heels for the spectacle of it all. 🥰
Now, while Le Sacre du Printemps was just around the corner, a truly classic tutu, one I'm sure you've all seen many times, was taking the stage at the Paris Opéra - the iconic tutu worn in Giselle! 😍 Giselle, a beloved Romantic ballet with its elegant movement and heartbreaking storyline, captured the hearts of everyone!
This style of tutu - a bell-shaped skirt that creates an illusion of flight, was very popular in 1913, darling. A real dream, a floating cloud of tulle, designed to highlight the movement of the dancer! Every pirouette, every grand jeté was a display of exquisite beauty, showcasing the ballerina's grace and poise! 💃
Think about it, this little cloud of fabric - the tutu - was a powerful statement of movement and freedom. 🌬️ It encapsulated a world of graceful movement, expressing feelings that could not be spoken, and that still captures us all, even in the 21st Century! 💖
Just a note, dearest readers! This tutu from Giselle, while oh so enchanting, wasn’t quite the first tutu, not by a long shot! It took centuries of refinement from a long line of dance innovators to come to this delicate creation. For a deep dive into the tutu’s historical journey, make sure you catch my past #TutuTuesday posts on www.pink-tutu.com. 💻
So, we’re on a lovely train trip now back to Derbyshire, full of beautiful and new ideas for tutus - oh how I do love shopping on these little travels! 🚆 But don’t worry, I’ll be back next Tuesday with another inspiring #TutuTuesday - see you then, darling! ❤️
Stay sparkly!
Emma.
