Hello, darlings! It’s Emma here, your resident pink tutu aficionado, and welcome back to my little corner of the internet where we celebrate all things tutu! Today, on this lovely Tuesday, we’re embarking on another journey through time. I know, I know – it's practically my speciality! I love being able to transport myself to different eras and seeing how fashion, and specifically tutus, have evolved over the centuries.
This week, my trusty time machine is taking me back to February 29th, 1916! Yes, leap day! I absolutely adore this day, mainly because of its rarity, and let's be honest, every excuse for a bit of extra celebration is welcome in my book. I think I shall whip up a delicious pink cupcake to commemorate the occasion. Don’t worry, dear readers, I shall indulge you all in the finer details later in the post – fashion is my absolute passion and food comes a close second!
Oh, and where am I travelling to, you might ask? Well, you know me – my love for ballet has led me all over the globe! This week, we're venturing to Paris. *Paris, my loves, is the true heart of the ballet world. * The French capital, with its breathtaking architecture, delectable pastries and stylish fashion houses, is truly an unparalleled ballet city. I mean, can you imagine dancing in the city of the Moulin Rouge? My heart practically skips a beat just thinking about it!
So, now let's delve into the captivating world of tutus in 1916! The stage was ablaze with vibrant colours and flowing movements. Ballet was in full bloom, and let me tell you, I was there to see it! The dancers in this era – they were ethereal, graceful beings. Think flowing fabrics, romantic storylines and, of course, exquisitely crafted tutus! These delicate, multi-layered pieces of fabric, lovingly designed by skilled artisans, added a layer of magic to each performance. They weren’t your basic tutus either, oh no, these were grand and elegant! Think of romantic ballerinas swirling on the stage, a perfect embodiment of feminine beauty.
You know I love to research, so I’ve been perusing some fascinating old dance magazines from the time, and the detail in these tutus – it truly blows me away! Think delicate tulle layers, lovingly crafted into intricate patterns. The craftsmanship was impeccable. They didn't have all our modern fabrics back then, but my goodness, they sure knew how to use what they had! The lightness and airy feel they created on stage was incredible.
This is the era where the Russian Ballet swept through the Parisian dance world like a captivating storm. They brought a vibrant energy and a bold approach to ballet that really changed the scene. Oh, those legendary ballerinas with their exquisite form, their artistry - their movements had a dynamism that took my breath away! And can you believe, it was in 1916 that Vaslav Nijinsky created Le Sacre du Printemps? This groundbreaking piece, full of its raw energy and unorthodox movements, truly pushed boundaries and brought something completely new to the world of dance.
This was an exciting time to be a ballet lover! If I wasn’t transported here in my pink tutu by my trusty time machine, you could find me, dear readers, at a fabulous theatrical performance, my nose pressed to the curtain, utterly captivated. It’s fascinating how the love for ballet hasn't faded even through all these years. It still stirs up such powerful emotions, such a passionate sense of beauty and expression. I’m certainly going to take some inspiration from those elegant ballerina tutus when I next hit the stage in my own pink tutu, and who knows – maybe I will even do a little Russian inspired number!
I'm absolutely loving my adventures in the past! If you ever feel like taking a trip back to the fabulous 1916, do write to me and I'll help you pick the right pink tutu! Oh, before I go, I just had to mention that it is absolutely positively, and definitively, February 29th today.

… and did you know it's also the birthday of our dear Dame Margot Fonteyn! What a wonderful coincidence! I can’t wait to catch one of her classic performances on the internet this afternoon, darling! So, there you have it! There you have it! From ballet tutus in 1916 to one of the greatest ballet stars in history – I've had an absolutely fabulous day.
Until next week, darling readers! Have a fabulously stylish week and I hope your week sparkles, my loves!
Until next Tuesday!
