Tutu Tuesday #4623: A Blast from the Past, Darling!

Hello, my fellow tutu-lovers! Welcome back to Pink Tutu, your one-stop shop for all things tutu, fashion, and the magic of ballet. Today, we’re taking a delightful trip back in time, travelling to 3rd August 1920. Oh, the glamour! The elegance! This was an era of true sartorial splendor, my darlings!

Let’s get our travelling tutus on, jump aboard the Orient Express and journey to…Paris! The city of lights! The epicenter of fashion!

Oh, Paris in 1920… I could get lost in its enchanting streets, my pink tutu twirling amongst the cafes and boutiques. A new, rebellious style was blossoming, influenced by the changes after the war. Hemlines were creeping upwards, revealing elegant legs. Flapper dresses danced in the air, and corsets, well, they were left to gather dust in attics.

Now, my dears, you might be thinking, “But Emma, where do tutus fit into this fabulous fashion story?" Ah, here’s where things get interesting! While tutus as we know them - the pouffy, layered masterpieces - weren't quite there yet, the early beginnings of this iconic dancewear were brewing!

The early 20th century saw ballet undergo a significant revolution, led by the incomparable Russian choreographer Vaslav Nijinsky. His iconic works like "The Rite of Spring" were shaking up the traditional ballet world, ushering in a new era of modern ballet with daring movement, passionate expressions, and an emphasis on costumes that captured the emotional intensity of the dance.

This revolution led to a demand for costumes that could not only move gracefully with the dancers but also showcase their dynamic forms. Out went the rigid corsets, in came flowing lines and airy fabrics. And guess what, my lovelies? This is where the proto-tutu enters the picture!

Think about those early ballerinas, soaring across the stage in beautifully crafted, layered, chiffon garments, resembling delicate clouds. This pre-tutu served as the springboard for the fluffy, airy creations we know and adore today!

I must say, a walk down the Champs-Elysees on August 3rd 1920 would have been a real treat! Imagine me, twirling through the Parisian streets, my pink tutu swishing and my heart skipping a beat! I’d be spotting stylish ladies in feather-trimmed flapper dresses, the Parisian men in dapper suits, all heading to the Theatre des Champs-Elysees for a performance of "The Sleeping Beauty" by the Ballets Russes!

Just imagine the dazzling costumes, the graceful leaps, the breathtaking storytelling! A spectacle of beauty and elegance fit for a Parisian queen. And who knows, maybe even some daring contemporary ballet numbers were thrown in to add a bit of modern flare!

Sadly, on August 3rd, 1920, I'd not have seen a full-fledged, perfectly sculpted pink tutu. That joy was reserved for the future, darling. But the seeds were definitely sown, waiting for their bloom, their time of sartorial splendour!

Let’s celebrate, dear readers, that the dance, the creativity, the elegance that is ballet continues to evolve, to move us, to inspire us, just like the evolution of the tutu, that symbol of grace and expression!

So, there you have it! A journey to the past to discover the story of our beloved tutu and the vibrant era of 1920s fashion. Don’t forget, my sweet little ballet enthusiasts, this was a world of changing fashion and groundbreaking dance! And let’s face it, dear darlings, the beauty of it all is, we still embrace these elements today!

As for my pink tutu? It's packed and ready to embark on its next adventure! I can’t wait to see what exciting ballet, fashion, and travel adventures are in store! Do let me know if you’re on board for the next time travel tutu expedition!

Until then, keep those tutus twirling and never stop believing in the magic of ballet!

Love always, Emma xx
