Tutu Tuesday: A Whirl Through the Twenties!
#4635
Greetings, fellow tutu enthusiasts! It's your favourite pink-clad ballerina, Emma, and welcome back to another #TutuTuesday delve into the fascinating history of this magnificent garment! Today, we're venturing back to October 26th, 1920, a time of change, glamour, and some pretty fab fashion.
My oh my, what a whirlwind this trip has been! I journeyed by train, of course – what else for a ballerina? The countryside scenery of Derbyshire, England, was stunning, but once I arrived in… well, let's just say that this town was buzzing with excitement!
I’m afraid I cannot reveal exactly where I’m travelling to. You’ll have to come along with me on future #TutuTuesday trips for that – trust me, there’ll be a few surprises! I wouldn’t want to spoil the fun for you.
But let me tell you, stepping off the train into the lively energy of this bustling city, my little pink tutu was practically tingling with anticipation. Just the air here is laced with the promise of creativity, laughter, and of course, incredible fashion! Oh, the delightful flappers here are dancing to jazzy tunes, and those long, beaded dresses are quite simply ravishing. The women are bold, and their personalities radiate from under their cloche hats and bobbed hairstyles.
Speaking of flappers… the influence of dance on fashion at this time was undeniable. Think loose, flowing silhouettes, shimmering fabrics, and… wait for it… shorter hemlines! Oh yes, the freedom of movement was finally celebrated. I see a familiar pattern emerging: fashion and ballet, two forces always pulling in the same direction!
Now, imagine, if you will, this picture: swirling fabrics, the vibrant energy of jazz music… theatrical light playing on bare legs… It's almost a tutu moment, don’t you think? While it wouldn't be for another few decades before tutus were a commonplace feature of ballet, we can clearly see that the ground was being laid for that magical, swirly, tutu future!
And what did we see today? Well, dear friends, I popped into the theatre – oh, how I love these magnificent places, buzzing with stories waiting to be told. Today, I had the absolute delight of catching a performance of 'The Sleeping Beauty'. The music was soaring, the costumes splendid… I almost cried with delight – a few ballerinas had adopted their own interpretation of the tutu, you could say – beautifully flowing, voluminous skirts made with soft fabric!
Now, some might say, "That isn’t quite the tutu we know and love today", and yes, there’s truth in that. The tulle and structure were a bit less dramatic, and it took time for tutus to become the whirlwind of movement that they are today!
But just as these graceful performers danced on stage, wearing their unique and delightful interpretation of a ballerina’s skirt, I felt a wave of inspiration! What they did so long ago continues to inspire me today… because as I watch every tutu evolution unfold, it strengthens my conviction that each version has its own magic and elegance!
As I write this, my little pink tutu, filled with my travels to 1920s, feels ready for anything. There is a strong feeling of change, and fashion is not afraid of new ideas. I hope, you feel the same way. And I hope you are excited for our journey into next week's #TutuTuesday!
Until then, may your days be filled with joy and the twirling dreams of pink!
With Love and Tutu Kisses,
Emma xx
