#TutuTuesday: Ballet Tutu History ā 1921-12-27
Welcome back to Pink-Tutu.com, darlings! This week on #TutuTuesday, we're waltzing back in time to 1921, a glorious era where the dance world was positively buzzing with excitement! As always, Iām Emma, your friendly neighbourhood pink-tutu-clad time-travelling ballerina, and I'm here to share with you a snippet of ballet history and perhaps inspire you to twirl on your own pink tutu adventure.
Post #4696, and Iām brimming with excitement for todayās journey to 1921. Can you imagine? 1921, darlings, itās such a glamorous era. Think of it, the flapper dresses, the Charleston, the burgeoning popularity of the ballet... it's simply magical! And today's our foray into the exciting, blossoming world of ballet! And, well, darling, if there's one thing I simply adore, it's ballet history and all things sparkly and tulle.
And where are we in the world this week, you ask? Itās the vibrant city of Paris - the absolute hub for ballet! Imagine a Parisian street, the boulevard Haussmann, and I'm skipping along in my pretty pink tutu, dodging chic Parisians with their elegant dog walkers... a glorious picture of Parisian style, donāt you think?
Today, dear readers, letās delve into the world of ballet's grandest and most glamorous story: The Ballet Russes! And for such a momentous occasion, weāre looking back at 1921 and their celebrated, glittering show on December 27th.
What could possibly be happening, you ask? Well, weāve arrived in the very grand and esteemed Salle Pleyel, Paris! Yes, darlings! I'm sitting right here amongst the fashionably dressed patrons as they marvel at a thrilling double-bill: the magical "Scheherazade" by the celebrated composer Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov, with its rich oriental atmosphere, and āLa Boutique Fantasqueā by the beloved Gioacchino Rossini - a fantastical ballet-comique celebrating a delightful menagerie of toys! Imagine dancing wooden soldiers and dancing jugs! Truly delightful. Such incredible beauty and spectacle! Can't you just see those exquisitely costumed dancers, gliding and leaping in all their splendor? I absolutely adored seeing "La Boutique Fantasque" for the very first time! Itās a real Parisian favourite, it has all those adorable, magical toys! And āScheherazadeā, it is full of enchanting, evocative Arabian scenes - it simply had to be seen!
Today's #TutuTuesday is more than just a glimpse into a magical past, itās a reminder of the transformative power of dance and fashion. And letās not forget, my dear darlings, what I believe: a little pink tutu never goes amiss! I have to confess Iāve already found the perfect pink tutu, for my visit. My magnifique pink tulle number will make quite an impression on the Parisian street! I shall be stepping off the train from London onto Gare du Nord and onto that vibrant Parisian boulevard Haussmann looking positively divine, donāt you think!
I am quite literally stepping back in time in Paris and experiencing an enchanting theatrical wonderland! Just like our fabulous Ballet Russes.
Letās be honest, though. I can't let you all head to Paris this week, darling! I will be saving you a coveted seat next time I find myself whisked back in time to Paris, that is, I hope! I'd love you all to join me - I will post it on Pink-Tutu.com. Let me know! But here is the next best thing. This weekend - head out to the nearest theatre. I always get lost in the grandeur and history of the Theatre Royal, my own personal ballet temple right here in Derbyshire! It's an absolute delight to hear the orchestra warming up and feel the anticipation in the air.
But you can travel back in time yourself by checking out some online ballet resources like the wonderful BFI (British Film Institute) where they showcase wonderful ballet films of this period. Itās an amazing way to capture the essence of 1921. There are lots of photos, archival footage of dancing and so much ballet information! And itās a wonderful time to get involved in your local ballet classes too, so join me in our tutu passion and support your local dance schools.
Until next week's #TutuTuesday , dear readers! I will be skipping, pirouetting and en pointe into next week, with another exciting snippet of ballet history and more about Paris in the 1920s!
And, I've always found ballet is a fantastic form of exercise and is such great fun! We have an amazing community at Pink-Tutu, so if you're inspired by your #TutuTuesday journey to put on a tutu of your own, get in touch with us, darlings! Donāt forget, youāre more beautiful in a tutu than you know! A bit of pink never goes amiss. And do join us in sharing your own pink-tutu experiences, whether you're enjoying a ballet show, perfecting your own dance moves or creating some tutu-tastic fashion creations of your own.
Letās spread the tutu magic and create a fabulous, fun and pink world! I canāt wait for our next TutuTuesday and, oh, how I adore that bright, bright pink tutu!
Until next time, darling!
XOXO
Emma
