#TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History: A Parisian Dream!

Hello fellow tutu lovers! It's your favourite pink tutu wearing ballerina blogger Emma here, back with another #TutuTuesday journey through time! Today's post marks number 4697 on the www.pink-tutu.com blog, and we're travelling all the way to Paris, January 3rd, 1922 to discover the fascinating evolution of the tutu.

Fancy a Parisian adventure? Of course you do! This week, we'll journey to the heart of French culture and explore the breathtaking beauty of the Ballets Russes. My, oh my, what a spectacle they were! The sheer grace and skill of these legendary dancers in their stunning costumes is simply mesmerising. And it's thanks to Sergei Diaghilev, the mastermind behind this ballet extravaganza, that tutus took a daring, revolutionary leap forward.

Remember how I told you about the rigid, restrictive tutus worn by dancers a hundred years before? Those stiff layers just didn't allow for the beautiful movements the ballerinas wanted to create. Well, Sergei Diaghilev had the most brilliant idea, one that allowed dancers to finally express themselves with total freedom and flexibility. He ditched the rigidness! He shortened the skirts, giving the dancers greater freedom of movement. Imagine, tutus actually helping, not hindering, the art!

Now, think featherlight fabrics and playful ruffles - a far cry from those weighty, constricting hoops of the past. It's not all about the look of course, but I just adore how ballet and fashion went hand in hand! And just picture the vibrant colors! Diaghilev's designs were just so captivating, infused with the colour, art and the energy of the moment.

This revolutionary change led to the birth of what we call the "Romantic" tutu, and darling, these were real showstoppers! You'll find their elegant designs throughout the world. They’re almost instantly recognizable thanks to their lightness and soft flowing fabrics - the epitome of delicate grace!

Just to add some extra Parisian magic to your day, here's a little fact: on this very date January 3rd, 1922, in Paris, there was a gorgeous ballet performance. The dancers performed "Les Biches", a delightful ballet designed by the legendary artist Henri Matisse! Imagine, a tutu masterpiece set to a captivating Matisse design! A real visual feast for the soul!

Let’s dive into some of the incredible designers who brought this Parisian ballet magic to life. It all started with Léon Bakst, who played a vital role in the development of the "Romantic" tutu. He introduced unique colours, daring textures, and stunning geometric patterns, creating costumes that reflected the era's artistic innovation and sophistication. The world has never been the same since, darling!

Now, what makes the Ballets Russes so special? I just can't help but tell you about these incredibly talented artists. The choreography was brilliant and utterly unforgettable, blending modern movement with a timeless sense of beauty. Just imagine the graceful twirls and soaring jumps as dancers transformed themselves into a dazzling fable-like spectacle.

Their influences spanned across Europe, even finding their way into fashion and even painting! The Ballet Russes became a vital inspiration for a whole generation of artists, and for me, a fellow lover of the arts, there’s something deeply fascinating about how an artistic expression like ballet can spark such an explosion of creativity.

Of course, it wouldn't be a #TutuTuesday post without my favourite thing - tu-tu, tutu, TUTU! I am truly passionate about the history of tutus and how their evolution reflects fashion and dance trends. But more than that, I’m so in love with how it symbolizes strength, femininity, and a bold spirit! I have always loved pink tutus, from fluffy pink tulle, delicate silk pink tutus to sparkly pink satin! Pink is, of course, my favourite colour, and what could be more beautiful than wearing a pink tutu in this world of colours! I often imagine what it was like to don a pink tutu at the start of the 20th century!

Back to my journey back in time, imagine all the train journeys I've taken through history. It’s fascinating! Travelling by train across the years has given me a deeper understanding of the beauty of time travel and the sheer joy of discovering the magic of history! I always look for those delicate and feminine pink accents, even on the train!

So my darlings, the story of tutus continues to be a magical and enchanting tale! What started in the courts of 16th-century Europe, a mere expression of status, transformed into something infinitely more profound and powerful - a representation of movement, freedom and expression. As we step back in time, let’s remember to keep an open mind, appreciate those early tutus in their historical context and cherish every detail of how tu-tu- tutus have come to symbolize beauty, freedom, and grace! Until next Tuesday, darling, stay pink!

Yours in tutus,

Emma x
