#TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History: June 6th 1922

Welcome, darlings! It's Emma here, back with another fabulous #TutuTuesday post on www.pink-tutu.com - the place to be for all your ballet tutu needs!

Today we're venturing back in time, darlings! This Tuesday we're taking a trip (by train of course! so chic) to the 6th of June, 1922, a time of incredible transformation in the world of ballet and fashion. Just imagine, the Roaring Twenties, all glamour, jazz, and flapper dresses!

Oh, and let's not forget about the tutus! This is where our gorgeous journey starts!

A Fashionable Blast From The Past

Oh, I simply adore these vintage styles! For the fashionistas like myself, 1922 was a year bursting with daring looks and vibrant energy.

For the ballerinas, well, let me tell you, those 1920s tutu styles were so chic. Imagine it: silky tutus, often made of georgette or chiffon, all billowing and swirling with movement. The hemline dropped to a grazing level - long, graceful and, dare I say, sultry - reflecting the change in the mood of the era.

A nod to the changing shape of women's fashions, the 1920s tutu emphasized a straight silhouette, with fewer layers and a looser, more flowy construction. This was a far cry from the tighter, layered, Romanticism-era tutus that came before, which perfectly accentuated the grace of the ballerina. The 1920s tutu aimed to show movement in a softer, almost ethereal manner.

The Rise Of The Romantic Tutu

Just imagine me on stage wearing one of these beautiful, fluid 1920s tutus, as I perform a delicate, swirling choreography to a Tchaikovsky score. I'd simply melt into the movement and expression! The romanticism of the ballet would be emphasized by this beautiful, soft, yet daring style of tutu.

However, my darling readers, it was a slightly different story in 1922! The romantic tutu wasn't just about showcasing elegance. There was another force at work – the Russian Ballet!

Remember those impressive ballerinas - Olga Spessivtseva and Anna Pavlova! Imagine, the delicate grace of Olga Spessivtseva, and then the fiery, theatrical intensity of Anna Pavlova! Oh my! Both these incredible ballerinas influenced the design of tutus.

The romantic tutu became both elegant and dramatic - just as these extraordinary dancers were. These powerful, graceful ladies helped to redefine the style of the ballet tutu!

This era literally made the tutu what it is today! Just imagine how these elegant dancers made these fabulous styles so inspiring.

And on this very day - 6th June, 1922, an iconic ballet, Vaslav Nijinsky’s The Rite of Spring, was presented once again. Think primitive and intense.

With its dramatic choreography and strong, rhythmical movement, this production exploded with new ballet styles. Nijinsky and his incredible corps de ballet really took things up a notch in the world of ballet design. The long tutu came into its own and it became a major fashion statement!

I imagine me on stage as part of that chorus line, dancing and swishing the long tutus in rhythmic unison. It was just electrifying ! It must have been so impactful!

A Tutu Timeline

1922 was such an important time for the tutu. From subtle elegance to dynamic style changes, the 1920s provided some *amazingly dramatic and sophisticated designs that were so modern for the time!

Here are some key points in our Tutu Timeline :

1922 - 6th June! The iconic *"Rite of Spring" * premiered and brought avant garde changes in tutu designs and choreography, taking ballet to new heights. 1925 - The Ballets Russes, led by Serge Diaghilev, wowed audiences with innovative tutu designs all across the world, sparking new fashion trends.

I'm just obsessed by this fascinating period of style and performance

And don’t even get me started on the shoes, darlings! Point shoes took centre stage! Those elegant shoes made the dancers appear so light and graceful, and allowed for breathtaking leaps and whirlwind pirouettes - an iconic feature of ballet even today.

Inspired By This Past, Looking Towards The Future!

So, my dearest readers, let us take this gorgeous lesson of inspiration from the past and look ahead to the future! We never know what amazing new designs might burst onto the scene!

My hope is to see more bold tutus - colours like the gorgeous deep crimson, vibrant electric blue, or an amazing sapphire, with beautiful embellishments like pearls or sparkling diamante stones, inspired by 1920s flair. Imagine, my dear reader, the ultimate combination of glamour and grace!

I see more ballerinas being inspired by past trends and taking on daring choreography, as the modern ballerina looks to inspire new generations - just as the great 1920s dancers did.

Now, go on darlings! Have a marvelous Tuesday!

With Love,

Emma x
