Hello, darlings! Welcome back to another dazzling edition of my #TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History blog! It's a bit sweltering out here in the heart of London, but that doesn't stop this ballerina from twirling on through the streets. After all, when it's time to dive into history, even a little heat won't dampen the passion for a perfectly pink tutu!
This week, we're time-travelling to a rather fascinating era - June 13th, 1922. The Roaring Twenties! It's an age of flapper dresses, Charleston dances, and jazz music spilling out from every street corner. Can you imagine, darling? It's like stepping into a lively, vibrant ballet, isn't it? And oh, the fashion! Imagine me waltzing around in my favourite pink tulle, mingling with the flapper girls in their fringed frocks and bobbed haircuts.
Now, don't be mistaken - while I absolutely adore the modern ballet styles and our exquisite tutus, let's be honest, those of the 1920s were something else entirely. The skirts weren't as full and layered, they were a touch more streamlined and flowing. Imagine a silhouette that hugged your curves and moved with the grace of a swaying reed! Just divine, right?
Speaking of the "Twenties," let's have a look at the ballet scene in 1922! As luck would have it, June 13th, 1922, fell on a Tuesday - ballet night! So, let's peek into the hallowed halls of the Covent Garden Opera House!
What's playing, you ask? It's a grand revival of a masterpiece by none other than the legendary Marius Petipa! "La Bayadère" is taking the stage, darling! A grand romantic ballet filled with exotic themes, intricate footwork, and enough dancing to make your heart soar! Just imagine the swish of silks, the rhythmic tapping of feet, and the music filling the grand, ornate space of the Opera House!
I simply had to get myself a ticket for this magnificent spectacle, of course! A performance of "La Bayadère," the gorgeous setting, the elegant outfits, and all the whispers and gasps of the audience! The entire experience is like a captivating dream! Oh, darling, don't you just want to hop on a time machine and experience it all for yourself?
Speaking of travelling, dear readers, I recently ventured into the beautiful countryside of Derbyshire. The landscape was simply breathtaking! I managed to sneak in a ballet performance by a talented group of local dancers - "Swan Lake", performed with grace and poise. It reminded me just how captivating a performance can be, even in the simplest of settings.
Back in 1922, I did a little shopping around and fell in love with some of the styles. The Parisian fashions, in particular, had captured my fancy with their flirty flapper dresses and glamorous headbands. I even snagged a chic pair of drop earrings! A delightful nod to the glamour and elegance of the decade.
Darling, this "Twenties" trip has made me consider my wardrobe! Maybe I should invest in a fabulous fringed dress for my next outing? Oh, the possibilities! What say you, readers? Should I attempt the Charleston, or a foxtrot in my tutu? Leave your thoughts in the comments, dear readers!
And before we depart for this week, remember, it's always #TutuTuesday, and the world needs more pink! Let's make it happen, darling. Embrace your inner ballerina, put on a dazzling tutu, and let your spirits soar!
Until next Tuesday,
Emma xoxo
