Tutu Tuesday: A Twirl Back in Time! #4749
Hello my dearest tutu lovers! It’s your favourite pink-clad ballerina blogger, Emma, back again for another whirlwind journey through the glorious history of the tutu.
This week, we're travelling back to 2nd January, 1923, and let me tell you, things are about to get seriously glamorous! I'm currently nestled in a comfy first-class carriage on the Orient Express, hurtling towards Paris – the heart of the dance world – for a divine ballet performance this evening. Imagine, my darling readers, a velvet armchair, a steaming cup of tea, and a stunning view of the French countryside... all while being swept away by the magic of history!
But before we immerse ourselves in the exquisite spectacle of Parisian ballet, let’s delve into the enchanting world of tutus back in 1923. This year marked a pivotal moment in the evolution of the dance world. It was a period of burgeoning innovation, where new ideas and styles were challenging the established norms. Think graceful lines, shorter skirts, and an emphasis on freedom of movement. This was also a time of artistic breakthroughs. We’re talking Diaghilev's Ballets Russes, stunning performances by Vaslav Nijinsky, and a general celebration of artistic brilliance.
But before we get caught up in all that, let’s rewind and get a sense of the overall landscape. Picture it: London. You’re probably thinking foggy streets and bustling markets, right? Wrong! Think of bustling London streets, yes, but also an atmosphere positively buzzing with excitement, especially when it comes to fashion.
As for tutus, you see, they weren’t exactly called "tutus" in those days. "Tutu" became the commonly used name later in the century, around the 1950s to be precise.
You might be wondering, what exactly were ballerinas wearing back then? They sported variations on the Romantic era tulle-based “skirt” that we see in historical depictions – the kind that swept majestically as dancers pirouetted and gracefully floated across the stage. Think romanticism with a hint of ethereal elegance, with plenty of tulle and delicate embroidery! They would have been wearing lightweight skirts to allow for easy movement and that romantic ethereal aesthetic that had become synonymous with ballet in those times.
One of the most defining elements of the 1920s was the emergence of "Le style moderne". It was all about fluidity and expression! It's easy to see why these times hold a special place in my heart. They ushered in a fresh, bold aesthetic that emphasized the art of storytelling through dance.
Imagine this, my darlings: a dancer twirling with effortless grace, her silk skirt shimmering like a silver moonlit stream, a perfectly placed plié, and a final dramatic arabesque – that is the magic of “Le style moderne.” A symphony of movement and art, a world away from the everyday.
As the dance scene continued to evolve, ballerinas became bolder, challenging convention and finding freedom in movement. We witnessed a departure from the restrictive garments of previous eras – goodbye, long, heavy skirts, hello shorter, lighter ones! The focus shifted towards a natural fluidity, the graceful articulation of emotions through the art of dance.
Now, I need to get ready for my Paris trip! The journey promises stunning ballet performances and possibly some chic French boutiques to explore, I wouldn’t be a true tutu enthusiast without a touch of shopping, would I?
Until next week, my dears! Let’s embrace our inner twirling magic and don those pretty pink tutus! After all, "Tutu Tuesday" isn't just about fashion, it’s about finding the dancer within you and making every day a little bit magical!
See you all next week for another enchanting journey back in time,
Your bubbly, pink-loving ballerina,
Emma xoxo
P.S. This Tuesday in 1923 was no ordinary day, my lovely readers! It marked the beginning of the International Music Week in London, hosted by the London Chamber Music Club, with performances at Wigmore Hall.
So if you’re ever in London on the second of January, you might be fortunate enough to experience some enchanting music and maybe, just maybe, a little bit of ballet too!
Don’t forget to check back next Tuesday for another exciting journey through the history of tutus!
