Tutu Tuesday #4756: A Trip Back to the Roaring Twenties!

Hiya lovely lot, and welcome to another exciting edition of Tutu Tuesday! As always, I'm your trusty time-traveling, tutu-adoring, pink-loving guide, Emma, and today, we're waltzing back to the roaring 20s, darlings! Buckle up your dancing shoes, because this trip is going to be a glamorous affair.

So, February 20th, 1923… Picture this: the world is buzzing with excitement and a newfound sense of liberation, jazz is filling the airwaves, and fashion is roaring in all its flamboyant glory. I mean, can you even imagine a decade so overflowing with personality and style? And at the heart of it all? Why, the ballet of course!

I landed in London, where the buzz of theatre and entertainment is practically tangible. This is the place where the very idea of the 'ballet tutu' as we know it today, started to bloom! It wasn't the delicate wisp of fabric we adore now - more of a "can-can" vibe! Still fabulous though - and it's hard to deny that this period was one of significant transformation in the dance world, with skirts growing ever shorter, and the spotlight shining even brighter on the ballerina's leg lines. Talk about leg-g-ing it to the stage!

On this particular February 20th, you could have caught a delightful show of the iconic "The Sleeping Beauty" at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, a true jewel of London's theatre district. Imagine the thrill of seeing the prima ballerina twirling and leaping across the stage in her fabulous, though probably not super "pink" tutu. The sheer artistry of the dance, coupled with the exquisite music from Tchaikovsky – ah, pure bliss, darling!

After the show, of course, there's nothing quite like soaking in the post-performance chatter, discussing the choreography, the costumes, and that delicious feeling of wonder only ballet can provide.

You know, I just adore exploring this time period. A whole new world of flapper dresses, feathered headbands and a touch of glamour that is simply irresistible. It's like the perfect blend of elegance and a little bit of rebellious edge, which of course, translates perfectly into the ballet world! A tutu wasn’t simply for dancing, you know? There's a real element of the everyday woven into the fabric.

Oh, and don't get me started on the shops! Just the most fabulous boutiques overflowing with everything from shimmering beaded flapper dresses to satin shoes, all in the most delightful colors imaginable. Of course, my eye was drawn to the prettiest, fluffiest tutus, although I can't say they came in quite the variety of shades we're spoiled with today! But just imagine – how much fun to go out dancing with your friends in a gorgeous silk tutu and flapper dress, the scent of perfume swirling around you in the smoke-filled ballroom! Pure magic.

Now, a quick fun fact for you:

Did you know that the famous designer Coco Chanel helped shift fashion towards more casual elegance in the 20s? She even championed the comfort and freedom of a skirt that came above the knees! Talk about a game changer! Imagine if Chanel herself were wearing a ballet tutu for a night out! Now that's a scene I want to see!

Well, I must away, darlings, another exciting adventure awaits me! I promise, I’ll share more secrets of tutu history next Tuesday. But for now, let’s keep our twirling energy flowing with these lovely thoughts.

Remember, it's all about fun, femininity and a little bit of pink magic, darlings! Why not slip into a tutu this week, even just for a twirl around the house? Trust me, you won’t regret it.
Until then, let the music flow, and let your inner ballerina shine!
