#TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History: July 31st, 1928 - A Time for Romantic Revolution!

Hello my darling tutu-loving lovelies! Welcome back to my little corner of the internet, www.pink-tutu.com, where it’s always #TutuTuesday and the world is our stage! I'm Emma, your ever-so-slightly time-traveling fashionista, and today, I'm taking you back to July 31st, 1928. A time of flapper dresses, bobbed hair, and - you guessed it - absolutely magnificent ballet tutus!

From Paris to Derbyshire: A Train Journey Through Time

Now, I'm sure some of you are wondering how I get about this whole "time-traveling" thing. Well, I won't bore you with all the details - just let's say a bit of good luck, a sprinkle of magical inspiration, and some rather impressive dance performances have afforded me the opportunity to hop about through history! Today, I arrived in Paris, France, via a rather charming steam train (what's better than a ballet performance? A ballet performance with a lovely train journey attached!). And let me tell you, Paris in the late 1920s was just oozing with artistic brilliance!

The Romantic Revolution in Tutus

This week's #TutuTuesday is a little bit different because I want to chat about how the world of ballet, specifically the tutus, was changing. It wasn't all frilly romanticism; no, the tutu scene in the 1920s had a touch of rebellion mixed into the mix! You know, we're talking "the flappers of ballet". While ballet had always been a bastion of grace and elegance, in the 1920s there was a definite shift, especially when we look at the costumes, with the rise of the Romantic Ballet, thanks to influential choreographers like Marius Petipa. They were daring, bold, and full of life. We're seeing shorter tutus with intricate details and even a touch of the bohemian thrown in for good measure! Think soft chiffon, delicate lace, and maybe even a few sparkles for added dramatic effect! The tutu had a playful, liberated feel that really encapsulated the rebellious energy of the time.

A Tutu for Every Personality

Just think, a short tutu meant so much more movement on stage! They were designed to allow for those effortless spins, graceful jumps, and stunning extensions that define the elegance of ballet! But it wasn't just about freedom of movement, it was about expressing a newfound, bolder identity! Remember, these were the years when women were finally getting their chance to truly shine. So naturally, their stagewear reflected this bold new spirit!

From Theatre to the Streets: Tutu Fever!

So you see, ballet isn't just about fancy shows and intricate steps, my dears. It's about history, fashion, and self-expression, too! In the 1920s, the tutu had begun to make its way into the mainstream. From theatrical stages, the look had crossed over onto fashion-forward streets - think chic flapper dresses and skirts paired with feather boas, delicate gloves, and that "tutu" silhouette! And I tell you what, with a little bit of creativity, there’s a tutu out there for absolutely everyone! Whether it’s a grand ball or just a picnic in the park, it's all about that joyful, carefree feeling a tutu brings. And, oh my darling dears, it makes my pink-tutu-clad heart so happy to see everyone join the tutu movement!

What to Expect for This Post’s Tutu Journey

So now that we're all revved up about this lovely tutu revolution, let’s chat a little about this exact day - July 31st, 1928!

  • It’s not every day that one can say they “celebrated a special ballet-themed performance!”, but you'd be surprised at what happens when you’re in the company of a time-traveling ballerina like myself. Today in 1928, my eyes were blessed with the sight of "La Sylphide", a delightful ballet! A beautiful mix of drama and dancing that's truly been a constant reminder that the story of tutus is, indeed, a love affair that knows no time constraints.

    • And now to take this Tutu Tuesday further! I went out and “bought myself” a lovely hat!
