Tutu Tuesday: A Whirl Through the Twenties! (Post #5084)
Hello lovelies! Welcome back to my little corner of the internet where all things pink and twirly are celebrated! It's me, Emma, your ever-so-slightly-obsessed-with-tutus-but-in-a-good-way blogger, and it's time for another #TutuTuesday.
Today, darling dears, we're taking a little time trip back to June 4th, 1929! Just picture it, flapper dresses and Charleston dances filling the air, while I'm in my glorious pink tulle tutu, looking oh-so-chic against the backdrop of a vintage Parisian ballet theatre. Oh, how I love the roaring twenties! The energy! The fashion! The sheer joy of movement and expression!
Now, before I go all starry-eyed, let's talk tutu history! You see, this date in 1929 holds a special place in my heart... not for any grand ballet premiere or extravagant costume reveal, but for something far more subtle and perhaps even revolutionary - the evolution of the tutu itself!
You know those gorgeous, flowing, multi-layered skirts that make us ballerina dreamers swoon? Well, those tutus of yore, my dears, were all about rigidity. Picture a ballerina struggling to get a single turn in those stiff, heavy, boned-to-the-bones, pancake-flat, and I dare say, a little bit uninspiring, versions.
Now, don't get me wrong, those traditional tutus had their place, but as you can imagine, for us dance-loving dreamers, it wasn't exactly the most liberating of outfits. They were more akin to a stiff corset than a joyous garment made for twirling and pirouettes!
Thankfully, my darling dears, our fashion-forward ballerina sisters of the 20s weren't having any of it! They longed for something more…more fluid, more free! They yearned for movement that was unhindered, and what better way to achieve that than with…yes, you guessed it! A lighter, softer, more pliable tutu!
And wouldn't you know it, the seeds of this fabulous tutu revolution were planted in this very year, 1929. They began using softer fabrics, lighter materials, and oh, so many more layers of glorious tulle, ditching those harsh bones and replacing them with a soft, airy structure! The effect? Pure magic! They achieved the elegant silhouette, with the added bonus of grace and agility on stage! The ballet world was forever changed!
And as I gaze upon this historic day through my rose-coloured (and slightly glittery!) glasses, I'm filled with such an immense sense of joy and gratitude for the visionary minds that gave us this magnificent invention! The evolution of the tutu? It's a tale as timeless and beautiful as the ballet itself, and a reminder that even the most enduring of traditions can find fresh expression.
But what exactly was happening on June 4th, 1929? You might be wondering!
Well, darling dears, while the tutus of ballet were changing, so was the world outside the theatre. This day was significant in the world of economics - it was the day that the American Stock Exchange, one of the world's biggest and most prominent exchanges, suspended trading due to the crashing stock market!
Now, I'm sure this made for a rather frantic time in Wall Street, but imagine the chaos as we try to imagine a world without tutus! Can you fathom such a thing?! Me neither! Thankfully, the graceful evolution of the ballet tutu marched onward!
This is just one small snippet from the endless stories tucked away within the glorious history of the ballet and tutu! It’s amazing what a difference just a small, seemingly insignificant change, can have!
So, go forth and dance, darlings! Don't be afraid to express yourself and embrace the evolution of style! Maybe we can inspire the future evolution of the tutu ourselves!
