Tutu Tuesday #5100: Back to the Roaring Twenties!

Hello lovelies! It's your favourite tutu-clad time-traveller, Emma, and I'm thrilled to be back for another edition of #TutuTuesday! Today we're heading back to the glamorous, dazzling decade that was the 1920s – and boy oh boy, are we in for a treat!

Let's hop onto the Orient Express, ladies, because today we're whisking ourselves away to Paris. This beautiful city has always been the heart of fashion, a place where daring silhouettes and flamboyant creativity come to life. It’s no wonder that the iconic ballerina look of the 20s found its roots here, too!

But what exactly makes this decade so special in the ballet world?

The 1920s brought with them a new era of modern ballet. The emphasis was on fluidity, expression, and dramatic storytelling. Ballet, in a way, mirrored the roaring social changes of the time: it was free, daring, and wonderfully experimental.

Our fashion journey begins at the Ballets Russes. Led by the legendary Sergei Diaghilev, they became a cultural sensation, captivating audiences worldwide. He famously commissioned legendary composers like Stravinsky and Prokofiev, while choreographers like Vaslav Nijinsky, Mikhail Fokine, and Bronislava Nijinska reimagined traditional ballet and pushed boundaries. This vibrant mix of talent revolutionized ballet.

Let's delve deeper into this revolutionary world. What made the 20s so different?

  • Goodbye, rigid tutus: Say hello to more streamlined silhouettes and daringly short hemlines! Forget about the heavy, layered tutus of the past. The 20s tutus were sleek, made of lighter fabrics like silk and tulle, and allowed dancers incredible freedom of movement.
  • Movement was everything: Choreography became bolder, reflecting the social and political changes of the day. We see a focus on lyrical and dramatic gestures, dynamic leaps, and exciting use of space – think swirling twirls and powerful jumps that redefined the very essence of ballet!
  • An explosion of colour and pattern: The designs for the era weren’t just elegant but reflected the Art Deco movement that swept the world. Bright geometric patterns, metallic accents, and elaborate, beautiful embellishments became a defining characteristic, reflecting the opulent atmosphere of the era. Think vibrant ruby reds, sapphire blues, and emerald greens alongside playful pinks! Who says you can’t wear colour on a tutu, ladies?

And speaking of colours, have you guessed what colour stole my heart back in the 20s? It's pink, of course! That gorgeous, vibrant shade was simply everywhere!

The Big Day

We’re travelling to 24th September 1929 - just weeks away from the beginning of the global stock market crash that shook the world. But for now, let’s revel in the bright lights, music, and incredible energy of the time!

And wouldn’t you know it, on this very date, the Ballets Russes were staging La Boutique Fantasque at the Théâtre de la Cigale! Imagine a beautiful, Art Deco stage alive with bright colours, dancing dolls, and playful music! The dancers would be gliding across the stage, their movements just as fluid and delicate as their delicate, beautiful tutus! It's a captivating combination I wouldn’t miss for the world!

The Ballets Russes performance perfectly embodies the revolutionary spirit of the 1920s, showcasing daring choreographic techniques and captivating, elaborate costumes. This incredible event became a defining moment for the ballet world. I just know this performance is the epitome of pure feminine artistry and glamour! It’s all about embracing beauty and expression – the perfect combination for #TutuTuesday!

Fashion Frenzy

While I love a good ballet, I simply can’t resist the irresistible lure of the boutiques! Luckily, Paris is overflowing with stylish shops just waiting for a visit. In fact, 1920s Paris was truly the capital of fashion and couture! Imagine silk scarves, gorgeous beaded gowns, sparkling jewels, and the iconic flapper dresses! All this is pure, decadent inspiration for us ladies.

For my own shopping spree, I would be hunting down the best Parisian boutiques. There's the stunning Madeleine Vionnet who redefined fashion with her draping and bold colour use. Coco Chanel's chic designs are an absolute must, as are Paul Poiret’s exquisitely elegant creations – his fabrics and textures, they’re pure luxury!

Don’t forget about shoes – I love how 1920s shoes added just that extra dash of sparkle to a look. A pair of sparkling, satin pumps with delicate embroidery would be the perfect pairing for a pretty tutu, just like I love!

Travelling in style

I simply adore the magic of train travel. In the 1920s, the trains were so elegant – beautifully furnished compartments, delicious cuisine, and the opportunity to mingle with intriguing fellow travellers. Imagine taking the express to Paris! This is an incredible way to explore new lands and immerse yourself in different cultures and styles. I just adore the atmosphere – you can practically feel the elegance and glamour of the times just stepping aboard the carriages.

This #TutuTuesday journey took us to a golden age of fashion and ballet! The roaring Twenties are all about creative exploration, freedom, and femininity, and that’s just the perfect inspiration for me! I hope it inspires you too!

I always adore connecting with you lovelies. Don't forget to comment below and share your favourite 1920s moments – fashion or ballet - with me!

Stay stylish and twirl happy!

Yours in Pink Tutu,

Emma
