TutuTuesday #5099: A Whirlwind of Whimsy: 1929-09-17
Hello darlings! Emma here, your resident pink tutu aficionado, ready to take you on another jaunt through the fascinating world of tutu history! Today we're skipping back in time to the 17th of September, 1929 - a date that might not ring a bell for some of you, but for those of us who adore ballet, it's an exciting day indeed. Why? Because it was a mere five days after the first public showing of "La Boutique Fantasque", an adorable little ballet about a Parisian toy shop brought to life. It's filled with dancing dolls, colourful costumes and, yes you guessed it, tutues.
Picture this: Paris in the roaring twenties. Flapper dresses, bobbed hair, the smell of freshly baked croissants drifting through the streets... And here we are, just after a world-famous ballet company has wowed the audience with its latest show - "La Boutique Fantasque". Imagine the buzz, the chatter, the whispers of delight as the women leaving the theatre discussed the ballerinas' delicate tulle and silk, the intricate embroidery and, oh, those colours! You wouldn't believe the variety of tutus, from playful yellow to bold, beautiful blue, there was a tutu for everyone.
Now, let's travel back in time and imagine ourselves sitting in the audience! Imagine the gasps of delight at the scene of "La Boutique Fantasque" bursting into life, each tiny doll transforming into a dancer in a fluffy tutu. Imagine how those twirls and pirouettes sent hearts fluttering and how the colours danced with the light! It must have been a truly magical spectacle.
Did I mention my love for shopping? Because shopping for tutus is just as exciting now as it was in the roaring twenties! I can only imagine that back then, there was a thrill in finding the perfect tutu to match your mood - whether you're a whimsical yellow, a charming red or a stylishly sleek black. It all depends on your mood, doesn't it?
Today I find myself back in Derby, surrounded by charming cobbled streets and historic pubs - you can never have enough historic pubs in my book - my train ride to Paris definitely gave me time to think of how far we've come! Oh, how the world has changed! It makes me wonder if there are any remnants of that initial Parisian ballet magic in the modern ballet world. How about we grab a cuppa, have a little chinwag and go for a spot of afternoon tea and let our minds wander through the captivating world of tutu history, darlings? Let's talk!
But don't you fret! If you can't get enough of this dazzling topic, be sure to join me for our next TutuTuesday when we'll continue our tutu time-travel through September 1929.
Until next week, stay fashionable, keep dancing, and keep your hearts full of the joyful magic of the ballet!
Your Tutu Twin,
Emma xx
