Tutu Tuesday: #5143
Hello darlings! It's Emma here, your friendly neighbourhood tutu enthusiast, back again with another dose of tutu history. As the clock strikes twelve (okay, it’s a little after midday, my ballet class ran late) it’s Tuesday and you know what that means! Another Tutu Tuesday! It’s so exciting to get back on the train for my time-traveling jaunt this week – my tutu collection’s been aching for a new piece from this era!
Oh my goodness! I’m currently stationed in glorious Paris, and the year is 1930! It feels like I’ve landed straight out of a ballet storybook! Can you even imagine? Parisian ballet dancers in shimmering costumes, their feet moving like lightning, their expressions oh-so-dramatic! It’s pure artistry.
Today marks the 22nd of July, a perfect Parisian summer day. I can feel the air buzzing with the hum of café chatter and the rhythmic tick-tock of clocks across the city. You just know some sensational ballet performances are going down tonight, perhaps at the Palais Garnier, a magnificent theatre renowned for its sheer size and the majesty of its ballets.
Oh, and the fashion? To die for! The Parisiennes are strutting about in flapper dresses, knee-high stockings, and hats adorned with feather boas and oh-so-glamorous bows. Their styles ooze chicness, don’t you agree? It’s hard to tell who's more beautiful: the fashion or the architecture.
But what about tutus, you ask? Well, the tutus are still a popular feature of classical ballet here in Paris. I must say, a Parisian ballerina with a pink tutu really does epitomise romance! And speaking of tutus, let's have a peek into their history:
Tutu Tuesday: Taking A Spin Back In TimeAs you probably know, the tutu's a beloved ballet garment. It's practically iconic! But before the glorious billowing tutus of today, the ballet world used to favor shorter, less voluminous, tutu designs. We’re talking calf-length skirts, folks. These weren't quite as showy but definitely served the purpose. Imagine leaping about in a fuller skirt! It was a fashion nightmare. We can all thank Marie Taglioni for the revolutionised tutu design when she unveiled her dazzling performance in La Sylphide, wore a sheer, romantic, billowing skirt. What an incredible moment for ballet, my friends.
Think of "La Sylphide" as the spark of tutu revolution! It paved the way for the elaborate and breathtaking tutus we adore today. These innovative designs were lighter, more flattering for dancers, and showcased their movements. The ballerina suddenly wasn’t just a performer, she became an elegant vision in motion. Think flowing fabrics, intricate lace detailing, all making for the stunning ballerina look that continues to enchant us today.
Speaking of inspiring trends... Let's take a quick time-travelling detour to a shop near the Champs-Elysees! This afternoon I was shopping for some Parisian treats and was charmed by the sheer number of pink, peach, and powder blue tutus. Oh my, you simply can't have too much pink, darling! I mean, we’ve got to be supportive of our beloved ballerina fashion, and where better to do it than in the City of Love!
Now, I do want to mention some lovely historical ballet happenings here in Paris around this time. Have you ever heard of "Le Sacre du Printemps"? This piece, first performed in 1913, is regarded as an incredibly groundbreaking work, pushing the boundaries of dance in ways previously thought impossible. While not the typical ballet you would imagine, it's fascinating and powerful. It really does encapsulate what is possible with creative vision and commitment and it has forever changed the landscape of ballet choreography.
Did you know?
In the early 20th century, the Paris Opera Ballet made a huge impact. They were known for their high standard, the brilliant training of the dancers, and a beautiful sense of artistic expression. There was a unique emphasis on artistry and beauty, with elegant movements, graceful postures, and that je ne sais quoi Parisian sophistication that I just adore! *All these influences are why Parisian ballet still remains so highly revered today. *
It's moments like this that remind me why we adore the art of ballet: it's about dedication, perseverance, and endless expression!
