#TutuTuesday: A Peek into the Wonderful World of the 1930s Tutu! 🩰✨
Hello darlings, and welcome to another delightful #TutuTuesday here at www.pink-tutu.com! 🎀 As always, I'm your trusty time-travelling tutusphere guide, Emma, here to take you on a journey through the history of this glorious garment.
Today's trip brings us to the sweltering 12th of August, 1930. A fine day for a bit of a frolic at the ballet, don't you think? 💃
Hold on tight, we're off! 💨
Back to the Jazz Age with a Whirl and a Twirl
It's the height of the Jazz Age, and while we're in a bustling metropolis, I can tell you, a city overflowing with elegance and glitz is no less vibrant than the 21st Century, though with a few delightful differences!
What are we seeing at the ballet in the 1930s?
The most captivating creations are certainly coming from Serge Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes! 🪆 It's hard to resist a good, theatrical piece of ballet - a veritable whirlwind of colour and story. The sets are incredible. Can you picture elaborate, ornate, painted backdrops - like walking straight into an impressionistic painting? They truly are a feast for the eyes! 🎨
Let’s talk about tutus! In the 1930s, tutus are reaching a new level of captivating style! Gone are the long and dramatic tutus of the late 1800s. They are shorter, they're fluffier, they're designed for athletic grace and those elegant turns - imagine, flowing fabric creating a symphony of motion as a ballerina leaps and spins! 🌪️ The fabrics, darling! We're talking shimmering satin, airy chiffon, and maybe even a touch of silk, so it’s no wonder that the tutus in those days have a captivating air about them!
Now, picture those ballerinas with their hair tied up neatly, maybe a touch of red lipstick, a dash of eyeshadow, and oh my! The colours, simply stunning. And of course, for our absolute vintage ballerinas, a touch of silk ribbons and even a feather or two for added embellishment! 💋
But, just like in our time, there's much more to the ballet scene than tutus and performances. Oh, how much I love the ballet! But it's truly a part of a larger, vibrant social life, and where do our dear fashionable souls indulge? In stylish cafes after a performance, of course! ✨
It's at these lovely cafés where our social butterflies sip their lattes and debate the finer points of choreography, or perhaps dissect a scandalous fashion detail from a performance. And then there are the evenings out! The parties, the dinner gatherings, it's all a whirl of glamorous excitement! 🥂
My Very Own Vintage Inspiration
It's amazing what we learn about style when we get to hop through time. It reminds me that every era is just bursting with inspiring ideas. Just imagine, these beautiful, colourful 1930s dancers - what a fantastic way to make the present a little brighter with a touch of their era!
Oh, dear friends, this is exactly the point of #TutuTuesday. We can get our very own 1930s moment going, even in 2023. Let’s embrace the bright, glamorous tutus, the charming silhouettes, and why not even add a few dazzling feathers to your very own ensemble? Maybe a feather boa! Why not? We're daring, fabulous, and utterly devoted to tutus - so I say, let the tutus flow!
Let’s give those beautiful ballerinas of the 1930s their moment, a moment we all can feel in our fashion today. I simply adore how much I've learned during this #TutuTuesday jaunt - especially since today, on August 12th, 1930, was an incredibly busy day for dance, with even more dazzling events!
This evening we had The American Ballet’s Premiere of "Conchita", by Nicholas Tarassoff. (My goodness, wouldn't we all have adored this one - imagine the beautiful, elaborate costumes! ). A few miles away, the Bolshoi Ballet, a true delight for ballet fans worldwide, had the grand premiere of "The Fountain of Bakhchisarai." How exquisite! Imagine the elaborate costumes and magnificent backdrops of the Imperial Russian Ballet - my word!
What do I find most appealing about 1930s style? It’s the joy of life it portrays! These beautiful ballet performances are full of vibrant colours, stunning music, and dynamic dance.
I hope you've been inspired by our 1930s time trip, and may all your tutus shine even brighter. Be sure to join us next week for more wonderful #TutuTuesday discoveries!
Now, darling, on my way back, I might have to have a look at those feather boas on Etsy... 😉
Yours in all things pink and tulle,
Emma 💖
