#TutuTuesday: Ballet Tutu History, Post 5147: August 19th, 1930: The Tutu Gets Its Groove On!
Hello darlings! It’s your favourite pink tutu-wearing time-traveler Emma, back with another delightful dive into the history of our beloved tutu! Today we're whizzing back to August 19th, 1930, a date brimming with dance, drama, and dazzling fashion!
Paris, My Parisian Love!
I’ve landed in Paris, the undisputed capital of ballet and chic! I'm positively bursting with excitement! I'm just steps away from the legendary Palais Garnier, where history dances to life. It’s truly a fairytale setting for my ballet-obsessed heart!
A Day of Dance: 19th August, 1930
The city is buzzing with anticipation as the curtains are set to rise on a production of Swan Lake tonight at the Opera! My, my, what an exciting date! Swan Lake was already a staple in the world of ballet. Back in 1877, Marius Petipa, a legend in his time, conjured up a truly spectacular production. The choreography just captivates. And I just love a ballet with a strong story! Swan Lake certainly ticks those boxes, complete with romance, mystery, and, of course, graceful swan formations!
The Stars Shine Bright
I can only imagine the dazzling costumes and captivating performances that will fill the grand stage. Let’s talk tutus for a moment. You see, back in 1930, the iconic “tutu” as we know it, with its voluminous layers of tulle and short length, is already a cornerstone of ballet. Of course, in 1930, there’s not a whole lot of pink tulle just yet – perhaps just a touch here and there. Back in the day, it was more white or pale shades.
However, I know that very soon, vibrant hues like my beloved pink will make their way into the world of tutus and change ballet forever. (I even predict an eventual influx of hot pink!)
Fashion in Full Bloom!
The Parisian streets are bursting with exquisite fashion! I adore the era’s elegant flapper dresses with their shimmering fabrics and daring hemlines. Even with such exquisite choices, though, I always believe there’s room for a tutu or two in every fashionable lady’s wardrobe!
I love browsing through Parisian boutiques! There’s such a wonderful sense of joy around fashion. I even purchased a stylish straw hat with a fluffy pink feather to accessorise my trusty pink tutu today. Don’t worry, I am absolutely not travelling in my usual performance tutu. For travel, it is best to pack the more compact “tutus of everyday life”. Though my performance tutus do make an appearance on the train journey – a perfect time for a dance along to the rhythmic clicks of the rails.
A Pink Tutu Passion
My fellow dance-lovers, remember, fashion and ballet go hand-in-hand, just like two graceful ballerinas performing a beautiful pas de deux! And it all begins with the magic of the tutu. The time for vibrant pink tulle and beautiful performances is right around the corner. Until then, I'm off to immerse myself in this stunning era. I'll share more delightful tidbits from this historic journey in next week's post!
Do tell me about your favourite ballet or ballet dress in the comments below. I always love to hear from my fellow tutu-lovers!
Keep twirling and dancing,
Emma xoxo
