#TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History - 14th April 1931 š©°āØ
Greetings, darlings! Itās your favourite pink-tutu-clad time-travelling ballerina, Emma, here! Itās #TutuTuesday and you know what that meansā¦ a dive into the fascinating history of the most beautiful garment known to womankind! Today we're waltzing our way back to 14th April 1931 ā just imagine the fabulous fashion we're about to unearth!
This week's adventure took me toā¦ drumrollā¦ Paris! The City of Lights, the fashion capital of the world, where the whispers of the wind are filled with the rustle of silk and the tinkling of couture jewelry! I absolutely adore this place! The cafes are overflowing with bohemian chic, the department stores are positively bursting with dazzling displays, and the balletsā¦ well, let's just say, theyāre truly divine.
Now, darling, you may think 1931 seems ages agoā¦ but itās closer to today than youād think! The first televised ballet performance only took place three years later. Imagine - that's how recent it was! Can you believe how lucky we are today to have ballet just a click away, with YouTube and the BBC showing fabulous live performances from around the world? It's an age of convenience!
So what were the fashionable dancers twirling in, you ask?
Oh, my dears, imagineā¦ a flurry of exquisite tulle, a rainbow of vibrant hues (though, naturally, pink reigned supreme!). The tutus were often crafted from layers and layers of shimmering silk or satin, and oh my, how I dream of owning such a beautiful creation! But that wasn't all. 1931 marked a turning point for ballet! Think more tulle, more delicate designs, more emphasis on the ballerinaās body and her grace in motion! They called it the romantic style, my dears, and I think youāll agree, it was utterly charming!
To really soak up the atmosphere of this extraordinary time, I couldnāt resist visiting the OpĆ©ra Garnier in Paris! The theatre is like stepping back into another era. Itās positively breathtaking! The gold leaf, the velvet drapes, the chandeliers! And those boxes! Each box, I'm sure youāre thinking like I did, was meant for a princess or a society queen! Itās an architectural marvel! The atmosphere during a performance must have been electrifying! It truly brought the magic of 1931 to life for me.
Now, did you knowā¦ on the 14th of April 1931, a rather famous ballet premiere happened in Paris? It was a masterpiece, a romantic symphony brought to life in the form of ballet ā "La Fille Mal GardĆ©e," * by *Leonide Massine! A whimsical story of love, deception, and of course, happily ever after, with music by Herold. Imagine the delight of experiencing such an event! I felt as if I'd been swept away on the wings of a magical dove!
Of course, no trip to Paris would be complete without some shopping! My latest finds include a gorgeous hat (perfect for my next #TutuTuesday post, I just know it!), a little black dress to complete my Parisian chic, and ohā¦ a pair of ruby slippers! Isnāt that simply divine? Every time I wear those slippers, I know I'm embracing my inner fairy-tale princess!
As the sun sets over the Seine, and I sip a cappuccino while watching a street performance of āSwan Lakeā, I canāt help but think how wonderfully fashionable 1931 was, even if I have a hard time picturing it in those long skirts and fussy hats! Let's remember this history, darling, and make it our own! Let's channel those chic Parisiennes and wear tutus with pride!
Well, I must dash now! A time travelling ballerinaās got places to be! Don't forget to tune in next week for another #TutuTuesday and join me as we take a trip back in timeā¦
Until then, may your days be filled with graceful twirls and dazzling outfits!
