#TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History - 28th April 1931

Hello darlings! It’s your favourite time traveller, Emma, here, back from another whirl through the history of the ballet tutu. This week, I'm popping in to tell you all about what the fabulous ballerinas were wearing in 1931 – prepare yourselves, it's a real corker!

Post Number 5183 - Just Keep on Tutu-ing!

As always, let's get right down to business - it's all about tutus on www.pink-tutu.com - so here’s my take on how this fashion item evolved in 1931. Now, let me tell you, 1931 was a pretty spectacular year for the world of dance! I even got to see a fabulous performance by the legendary, beautiful, and talented Tamara Karsavina. I tell you, those Russian ballerinas, they know their tutus.

Fashion Forward in Fashion's Capital: Paris

This particular trip brought me to Paris, oh Paris, the undisputed capital of fashion! This beautiful, charming city was buzzing with the most amazing fashions! While Parisian tutus are still a sight to behold today, you won't believe how different things were back then! The tutus we know and adore had taken a step away from the longer, more layered romantic tutus we’ve seen in past decades. These tutus still held an ethereal beauty but were shorter, showing off a dancer's leg and beautiful pointework in a new way. I hear tell they even used some fabric from our era to get that beautifully textured look. And wouldn't you know it, the tutus even began to be inspired by what they were dancing. If they danced something classical, you could bet your bottom dollar they were in a classic-style, longer, layered tutu. If they were in something with a little more attitude? They chose a shorter, less romantic one. Such a modern flair, eh! I had to try a few on for size and twirled through some gorgeous salons, oh my! They say a Parisian tutu could transform any woman!

Travelling and the Romance of The Rail

Paris, that is where it was all happening back in the 1930s, especially for dancers! This made travelling on the beautiful French train lines, with all those carriages and ornate finishes, the best way to go. The train journeys were almost as much fun as the dancing! Think of the outfits. Think of the scenery. The excitement, all building up! It was an age of travel that makes you appreciate a simple, good cup of tea and the comfy seat by the window. Don’t even get me started on the romance, the little romance of a train journey and how well it pairs with all the excitement. You see, in this era, fashion and style were at the forefront, the journey is part of the performance. And for the girls of the dance, their clothes played such a significant role. The art, fashion, and style just all flowed. The dresses, the skirts, even the tutus. This kind of era demands we, as 21st-century ballet fanatics, honour that history.

Tutu Tuesdays in the Future of Tutu History

Remember darlings, just as you love the romantic looks of a longer tutu or the fun and energetic nature of the short one, they still use them in ballet today! Imagine that – that same evolution that started back in 1931. That’s the history, and you are witnessing a continuation. It makes me feel that when we wear a tutu now, we are keeping up an incredible, ever-evolving tradition. That makes me happy. It reminds me why I’m back in time, doing what I’m doing – because, honestly, there’s just something incredible about a ballerina in a tutu. I want everyone to feel that magical excitement, the sense of grace and style.

A Day in the Life

Today, April 28th, 1931, happened to be a lovely Tuesday, and I enjoyed the opportunity to see some fantastic ballets! You wouldn’t believe the buzz! Even "Swan Lake," which is still quite popular, had been reimagined a little – and a touch of modernity had crept into even the classic ballet's tutus!

Shopping Spree

Of course, I couldn’t resist indulging in a little shopping for myself. The ballet costume stores were amazing – rows of shimmering fabrics, lace, and tutus in various shades! They even had some pink ones, believe it or not. That gave me some fabulous inspiration, and even if I’m not taking those tutus home with me, you can be sure they'll influence my own next fashion collection. Because, remember darlings, everything is fair game here on www.pink-tutu.com! And everything goes better in pink, so remember, #PinkTutu and everything you dream of in pink will be a hit in our time!

So here’s a little tip, make sure to get out and experience the world!
