Tutu Tuesday #5188: A Whirl Through the 1930s!

Hello, darling tutu lovers! Emma here, your friendly neighbourhood pink-tutu-wearing time-traveler, back for another jaunt through the world of ballet and tutus. Today, we’re setting our sights on June 2nd, 1931. Get ready for some serious style and history, my dears! It’s going to be a corker.

As usual, I've just arrived in my time-traveling tutu, courtesy of a spectacular performance by the Bolshoi Ballet. You know, sometimes it’s the only way to get to these amazing places, and there’s nothing more delightful than a good, long train journey with my trusty ballet bag!

Stepping Back in Time

1931! We’re in the heart of the Great Depression, but as far as fashion goes, we're all about glamour. You see, tutus were a constant on stage in the 1930s. We’re still riding that wave of romantic ballet that emerged in the 1920s, with beautiful tutus fluttering gracefully and bringing that airy, dreamy, feel to performances.

What's in Fashion, My Dears?

Oh, but this isn't just about dancing! It’s all about those chic styles of the time, and ladies, believe me, there’s nothing quite as lovely as seeing these styles reflected in the tutus.

Think flowing gowns with shimmering fabrics, beautiful beads, and feathers - the very essence of elegance. I’ve been to so many performances lately, and you’ll see these trends on the ballerinas in all the beautiful tutus:

  • Glimmer and Sparkle: This decade absolutely loved the glitter, ladies! Glittering materials like sequins, beads, and embroidery made an appearance everywhere - and even on the stage. This created the most captivating shimmer in tutus as ballerinas danced. Just imagine it!

  • The Flowy Silhouette: Everything is flowing, with delicate lines. We’re talking a focus on femininity, with softer shapes and layers of light materials. This translates into elegant, swirling tutus with layers of tulle. Absolutely delightful!

  • Long Lines: Think sleek and long. It's all about grace and fluidity, ladies. The 1930s favoured graceful and elongated lines, and we see this in tutus with longer, flowing skirts. The look is definitely regal and just a little bit whimsical.

  • A Love for Colour: There are so many shades, so many variations of everything! Deep, bold hues were favoured in the fashion of this time and they’ve translated beautifully onto the ballet stage with dramatic, powerful colours for tutus. I think my favourite is emerald green, a colour of majesty!

  • Tutu for All Occasions: You know, tutus weren't just limited to the ballet stage in this era. It’s the best, isn't it?! Imagine - they’ve gone to the streets! You could spot tutus for evening gowns or dance performances on film sets!

Celebrating the Arts: June 2nd, 1931

Well, what’s been happening on June 2nd, 1931, you ask? What’s been on in this extraordinary era? On this day, 1931, the Royal Opera House is going strong. You would see, even in a time of austerity, such beautiful productions in the Royal Opera House and many other grand theatres of the day.

But there’s more. If I could, I would be visiting the Royal Ballet, a newly formed troupe with exciting and talented dancers. This troupe would change the world of ballet, so exciting to witness the dawn of such a grand and iconic institution. I could imagine, even though they weren't called the Royal Ballet back then, those incredible dancers on stage - and I know what I would be wearing: My best, most-glamourous pink tutu. After all, you have to dress to impress when watching such stunning performances. And a little pink always livens things up, doesn’t it?

And we must not forget the Bolshoi Ballet. They were at the top of their game and in my travels across time, this is a dance company that will never disappoint. They always, always, always pull out a sensational performance! The sheer beauty of it all. Oh! I just wish I had a pink tutu in a shade called ‘Bolshoi Bold’, just perfect for these ballets!

Keep On Tutus!

Now, my darlings, what do you say? Isn’t that just a glorious period to have been a ballerina?

Let's keep that excitement going for tutu-mania! Remember, the goal is to spread the joy of the tutu. So tell me: What's your favourite period in tutu history? And remember: Don’t be afraid to express your inner ballerina!

Go on, wear a pink tutu - go forth and be a pink-tutu-loving diva, darling!

**Until next time,

Emma**

  • P.S: My new favourite shop? “Liberty’s”. Just delightful, ladies. Every piece screams, “wear me!”. Just a beautiful wonderland. My top tutu tip? Always pick up some vintage pieces when you find them!
