#TutuTuesday: Ballet Tutu History - 1932-02-09
Hello, darling tutus!
Welcome back to Pink-Tutu.com! I'm your bubbly ballerina blogger, Emma, and today we're venturing back in time, like I do every Tuesday, to explore the dazzling world of tutus in the year 1932-02-09. Oh my, just thinking about that time makes my heart skip a beat! It’s all about that vintage romance and oh, the glamorous ballet outfits.
This is post #5224 for you, lovely lot, and for the uninitiated, this is my weekly delve into tutu history! Every week, I time-hop, fuelled by the pure, joyous energy of dancing, to investigate the amazing and fabulous world of the tutu - their evolution, their elegance and all their magical stories! So, let's jump on the train (I just adore travelling by train, it's so chic!) and travel back to Paris, my dear.
This was the city of the ballet and what a fabulous time to be alive in Paris. As always, my travels are funded by my ballet performances – and you would not believe the glorious shows I've been to, both on the stage and in the streets of Paris! (I think the Parisians themselves were born dancing - a joy to be around!) Let’s have a look, shall we, at what the lovely Parisians, were wearing…
1932 - a time when the world was in its stride. The era was a little more sophisticated compared to those more youthful looks we were looking at just a few decades prior (oh darling, a decade just flew by – remember 1920? - the sheer magic of those flapper styles!). Of course, tutus never go out of style (you can take that to the bank!), but 1932 brought its own touch of exquisite glamour.
The Paris of 1932 was, dare I say, a place of complete magic and chic sophistication! You would find the grand ballerinas, in all their divine glory, twirling in the most opulent of tutus! Can you picture it – the intricate details, the exquisite tulle, and a hint of sheer and delicate feather trimmings – it was simply spectacular.
Let's delve into some specific design details! Picture it:
Romantic Swan Lake Swirling in a "Tutu de Point"
Ah, my darling "Tutu de Point!" This particular tutu style – with the lovely short length – really sparked that era. A short skirt with delicate layers – such a gorgeous picture, and, it made every dance move more exciting! It was all about highlighting the ballet dancers’ graceful, slender limbs – oh, those beautifully honed muscles.
Think of the “pas de bourrée” as the dancer, adorned in this romantic "Tutu de Point" - those lovely short, gliding steps... Just enchanting, don't you agree? It's one of the ballet steps I just can't get enough of. The elegance is just divine.
Let’s rewind, back to 1932. What makes it so remarkable? Well, for those who haven't seen my blog before, we are on our journey to learn more about the history of the tutu and, I’m absolutely obsessed with tutus, don’t even get me started! I love it all! It's my dream, I confess, to get every single person in the world to wear a tutu... But, it's a slow process. I do get a few curious passersby on my journey!
It was all about delicate detail in the ballet world of Paris in 1932. Imagine a simple yet breathtaking, flowing silk “Tutu de Point”, a pale pink or maybe a rich lilac with a perfectly positioned single feather and a delicate scattering of sequins! Oh! Pure heaven on earth, in a nutshell! If you imagine those spectacular ballerina dresses - the “Tutu de Point” really brought the dress to life.
I’m so glad I found those fantastic old vintage magazines at the time! Imagine my delight when I discovered those lovely magazine pages showcasing exquisite ballerina costumes from Paris. You really had to see these fabulous costumes - the flowing designs - so romantic and lovely - it would really knock you over! I really loved all those gorgeous details of each costume - how the designs would make their way through all of these very distinct phases of development: from 19th century styles, right through to the magical elegance of the mid-1900s... Oh! I just adore tutus - it’s my little mission, you know, to make the world a more magical place, filled with tutus - how amazing would it be, to get everyone on board with the amazing world of the tutu?
Well, my darlings, I hope you found this trip through time a magical one! It's amazing to reflect on just how long the tradition of ballet and the elegance of tutus has been going for. What was it that we discovered? A romantic evolution that simply cannot be overlooked!
