Hiya darlings! Welcome back to another instalment of Tutu Tuesday on www.pink-tutu.com, your go-to website for all things tutu!
This week, I'm taking you all on a whirlwind journey to 28th June, 1932, a date brimming with elegance and wonder! Buckle up your dancing shoes, we're about to embark on a fabulous journey through time.
You see, time travel can be rather taxing. One day I'm pirouetting with Diaghilev and the Ballets Russes, the next I'm enjoying the thrill of a brand new Parisian ballet! It's all so thrilling, and it's even more thrilling when I can fund it through the magic of performing myself. After all, what better way to explore the world than with a tutu, a smile, and a generous sprinkle of glittery pink!
It wouldn't be fair if I didn't tell you how my adventures are financed! This week I was whisked away to Vienna for a ballet competition – can you believe they’re having those again?! Honestly, the world is obsessed with tutus. But who can blame them?!
I'm Emma, a young lady from the Peak District in Derbyshire, obsessed with all things tutus. And if you know me, you know my life mission – spreading the pink tutu love across the globe! It’s a daunting task, but a glamorous one nonetheless. And I have a feeling that 28th June, 1932, is going to be just the beginning.
A Time for Fashion and Movement:
The year is 1932, a time of art deco inspiration, jazz music, and yes, you guessed it, incredible fashion! Imagine, everyone was so effortlessly stylish! But my dear, tutus are in the midst of their own special golden age – think luxurious silks, extravagant decorations, and beautiful, graceful shapes. You'll spot these magnificent creations in the most famous theaters across Europe – from the majestic Paris Opéra to the intimate, romantic Covent Garden in London!
But before I get ahead of myself, let's talk about that extraordinary day.
The 28th of June 1932. In London, the Savoy Theatre is absolutely buzzing! It's a ballet evening, and let me tell you, these performances were legendary. We’re talking the Royal Ballet, a company that's synonymous with grace and precision. They're all about perfecting technique and creating breath-taking spectacles. If you see anything this evening, it will be absolutely mesmerizing.
Meanwhile, over in Vienna, the famed Vienna State Opera is aglow with its very own, "Wiener Staatsoper" - a vibrant ballet programme of its own. Now Vienna and tutus are synonymous! Don’t forget we're talking Strauss, Mahler, Mozart – Vienna has got the music for tutus. I can just see a troupe of ballerinas in fluffy tutus, and pink shoes gliding across the stage to a Strauss waltz. A dreamy scene, darling!
What else was on in 1932? You had the exquisite “Pavlova and her Company” doing what they do best – showcasing captivating ballet in dazzling productions! They have such an electrifying energy, you won’t be able to stay seated. And imagine those amazing tutus! They had a specific silhouette, something to truly dream about. It’s hard to describe, it's like a beautiful dream in chiffon! A masterpiece of delicate and luxurious tulle and frills – a pure spectacle. And you better believe these designs have got a hint of pink in them - always!
Now I must share with you a most glamorous highlight of 1932. You must know, this period saw the evolution of what we call "the tutu." From its earlier, very romantic and flowy styles, we see a more precise shape emerge. You might say, darling, it's taking on a life of its own! The ballerinas are looking even more slender and athletic as they navigate these refined garments. Oh! And there’s an air of feminine strength here that simply electrifies!
Pink, My Dearest Pink
The most stunning, delightful, and beautiful color of all, my dearest! It’s the hue of romance and whimsy!
You know how much I love pink, my precious lovelies, and the 1930s, in fashion, it was just starting to be adopted, oh my! If the dresses at that time had been slightly bolder, with more pink...well, you wouldn't be reading this now, I would be conquering the world, wearing my pink tutu, inspiring every single person to do the same. Just imagine...
The Fashion Journey of Tutus
Don't get me wrong, the history of the tutu goes way back! But in the 1930s, we're in a time of development – the designs are starting to solidify! It's so interesting to follow this progression of style. And in 1932, things get very, very exciting for the tutu – it’s moving forward and embracing modernity! It’s more practical but still extremely beautiful, imagine a feminine form with these very particular shapes, almost like a sculptural piece of art. The ballerinas can truly soar, twist and turn, like a flower unfolding under the spotlight. The dance and the fabric, all together, are one and the same!
But enough about history, darling. I can feel that I must tell you about my newest tutu obsession! Oh my! It's simply fabulous. I got it yesterday in London from this boutique called Harrods. It's been a treasure hunt all afternoon. You should've seen me, trying on different tutus. The most glorious symphony of colours, ruffles and feathers!
Oh, did you know I travelled there by train? I simply love to sit by the window, sipping tea, admiring the English countryside passing by! And just you wait – in my next post, I'll be talking all about vintage train travel, darling. That’s just another of my passions!
And I cannot leave without my favourite reminder! Remember darlings – wear a tutu, and share the pink! It's more than just a garment. It's about being fabulous, dancing your heart out, and finding that magical place within yourself!
Till next week, my lovely Tutu Tribe! xx Emma
