#TutuTuesday: A Peek into the 1930s with Emma! 🩰💖
Hello darlings! Emma here, your resident pink-tutu-wearing time traveler, bringing you another instalment of #TutuTuesday! Today's adventure whisks us back to August 9th, 1932 - oh, what a time to be alive! 🕰️
For you newbies, #TutuTuesday is all about exploring the fabulous history of tutus. From their beginnings as simple dancewear to the elaborate, glitzy creations we see on stage today, we’ll delve into the evolution of this most magical garment!
And where better to start than with Paris, darling! This glorious city was a veritable haven for all things fashion and dance in the 1930s. Just imagine the energy, the excitement - oh, the joy! Imagine walking through the cobblestone streets, with their charming boutiques and the heady scent of perfume wafting through the air. Oh, it simply wasn't done to leave the house without a touch of rouge and lipstick! 😉
And of course, a visit to the grand Opéra de Paris was a must for any lady with a discerning eye! This date, in fact, saw the debut of "Le Coq d'or", a dazzlingly flamboyant Russian ballet which sent the city abuzz with its colourful costumes and intricate choreography. 🦚✨ Imagine the gasp as the dancers took to the stage in their bejewelled tutus, sparkling under the gilded chandelier light - talk about a fairytale come true! It's safe to say, these glamorous displays fueled my own childhood ballet dreams and inspired the whimsical pink tutu I wear now! 💕
Speaking of dreams, oh, the costumes! Let me tell you, even ordinary dancers on a Parisian street corner were turning heads in their charming, if less opulent, ballet costumes. The fabrics were soft, feminine and flowy -think sheer silks, billowing tulle and perhaps a touch of velvet. But these dresses, while lovely, were not true tutus! That "true tutu," a fluffy confection of multi-layered tulle, had not yet made its grand entrance on the world stage.
In the early 1930s, dance costumes still retained that romantic, ethereal quality reminiscent of earlier eras, with a sense of airy elegance. ☁️ Imagine dancers in beautiful floral print bodices paired with gauzy skirts - truly a vision of grace and movement!
As the era progressed, fashion designers began experimenting with the look of the ballet costume! They were inspired, of course, by the incredible artistry and craftsmanship found in the grand ballets like "Le Coq d'or." Soon, those everyday ballet costumes were incorporating playful embellishments and luxurious textures! Think of delicate hand-stitched beads and ribbons adorning those ethereal skirts. It’s little wonder we began to see that distinctly 'ballet' aesthetic flowing into everyday fashion! Who can resist a dash of graceful flair, eh? And wouldn't it be heavenly to slip into a fluffy, blush-tinted skirt and twirl down the street? ✨ We could take a tip from the Parisian women of this era, who embraced fashion trends with such joy!
But wait, there's more! The 1930s, darling, were also a time for incredible innovation in dance techniques. This era saw the rise of contemporary dance styles, which often used free-flowing movements that challenged the strictness of the classical ballet techniques. This shift was definitely reflected in the costumes, which became more streamlined, practical, and importantly, free! 💃 Imagine dancers in stretchy fabrics, free from the constraints of tight bodices and stiff skirts, allowing for even more beautiful, expressive movement. I tell you, it's enough to inspire a whirl just thinking about it!
I know what you're thinking, "But darling, where were the tutus? Were they stuck in a time warp?"
Well, although the iconic tutu we know and love wasn’t yet mainstream, there were signs of its impending arrival! 🤫
While classic, flowing dresses were the norm, you'd catch glimpses of a more poufy approach. That little bit of extra tulle around the hips... it was just a matter of time before it blossomed into the magnificent multi-layered tutus we now adore.
Just imagine those beautiful dance shows back then, filled with delicate movements, captivating performances and a hint of that futuristic 'tutu energy' lingering in the air! What an amazing glimpse into the fascinating evolution of this timeless piece! ✨
Now, tell me all about your favourite tutus! Which era has captivated your heart? Have you seen a tutu that embodies the essence of those early Parisian ballet dancers, before the iconic "true tutu" took its rightful place on the stage?

Yours truly,
Emma 💖
