#TutuTuesday: A Whirl Through Ballet History: 1933-05-02!
Hello, lovelies! Welcome back to Pink Tutu, your one-stop shop for all things tutu and the most fabulous fashion finds from around the globe. It’s #TutuTuesday, which means it’s time to journey through the captivating history of our beloved ballet tutus. Today we're heading back to the 2nd of May 1933! Hold onto your bonnets, girls, because this one's a corker!
A Glimpse into the 1930s: Chic, Stylish, and oh so sophisticated
Stepping off the Orient Express and into Paris, I am immediately swept away by the air of chic sophistication that fills the city. It’s 1933, the Roaring Twenties have morphed into the glamorous and exciting Art Deco period, and everywhere you look there’s a sprinkle of elegant glamour. Ladies are sporting slinky silk dresses with a hint of 'that' flapper era in their saucy steps!
Of course, fashion is not all I’m here for. It's ballet that calls me. You know me, can't resist a chance to catch a show at the glorious Palais Garnier Opera House. Just the mention of "Palais Garnier" conjures up dreams of sparkling chandeliers, soaring arches, and those fabulous balconies perfect for spying the creme de la creme of Parisian society, or a cheeky glimpse of a dancer in their final curtain call.
Tutu Tales from 1933
Now, you may be wondering: What about the tutus, darling? You see, 1933 finds the world of ballet in a whirlwind of creativity.
Remember, dear readers, the 19th Century brought us the iconic romantic tutus: big, puffy and almost meringue-like, full of intricate lace and romantic whispers. Those magnificent tutus, although gorgeous, required quite a bit of bustling and tweaking - just imagine all those petticoats!
The 1930s brought us a much more practical and sleek silhouette, embracing the Art Deco elegance of the era. Imagine the traditional Romantic tutus getting a sophisticated, elegant make-over, with lighter, flowy fabric and simple, clean lines. Less was truly more. It’s a bit like when a ballerina takes off her warm-up clothes - that "ah-ha" moment of liberation and effortless grace!
It's a joy to watch as those gorgeous ballerina figures emerge on stage. Picture a dancer with those sleek lines moving across the stage, every step graceful and effortless, their movement flowing like liquid silk - simply beautiful! I wouldn't be surprised if the current resurgence of these styles was inspired by those fabulous ballerinas.
Time for a Touch of Theatre: Catch a Ballet on Stage!
You know I’m all about a live performance, ladies. And my research tells me I'm in for a treat! The Palais Garnier is hosting a special performance by Ballets Russes on this day, featuring the extraordinary Vaslav Nijinsky’s "Afternoon of a Faun." Oh, to be in the audience watching that incredible dancer! Can you imagine his legendary artistry and grace! I've seen recordings of this performance in the studio. To me, Nijinsky represents a pivotal point in the evolution of ballet. He truly changed the game with his dynamic and theatrical style, challenging norms and paving the way for new interpretations of classical ballet.
On Stage and Off: Finding the Perfect Pink
I'm sure that some of you have been asking – I mean, how can Emma, the ever so devoted pink aficionado, miss out on a trip to a chic Parisian boutique? Naturally, this time traveler is here for a little retail therapy! The boutiques around the city are full of amazing finds! But how does one get the perfect shade of pink in 1933? My little notebook says there's a whole lot of 'blush pink,' a touch of pale pink, and a splash of peach for those who are daring to be a bit brighter! It’s fascinating how colour plays such an important role in fashion trends – but my loyalty to that beautiful bold, bubble-gum pink still holds!
Ballet and Style - Always Connected
You see, darling, it’s not just the stage where tutu trends bloom! This 1930s style is filtering into street fashion. Even though it's more sophisticated, there's still that delightful flirtation with frills and delicate touches. Just imagine how stylish these ballet-inspired pieces look paired with a flapper dress and some shimmering sequins! My heart beats for the 1930s - all about embracing that sleek, glamorous vibe!
