#TutuTuesday: A Peek at the Past – Ballet Tutu History, 5th May, 1933! (Post #5289)

Hello darling dears, and welcome back to www.pink-tutu.com for another fabulous #TutuTuesday! Today, we're taking a little trip back in time, just the way I like it – by train! We're heading all the way to… wait for it… 1933!

But hold onto your petticoats, darlings, this is a time when tutus weren’t the bright, bouncy wonders they are today! We’re heading back to a time when the classic ballet tutus were crafted for grace and movement, not frills and fun. Now, I adore frills and fun, and you’ll find a lovely array of both in my latest vintage collection in the shop (oh, don't forget my lovely discount code – PinksAhoy – you'll find it on my homepage).

Let’s hop onto the train, shall we? We'll get comfy and I'll regale you with all the glorious goss!

The Twirling History:

1933 – A Glimpse at Ballet’s Evolution

So, you might be thinking – what’s going on with ballet in 1933? Well, the dance world was buzzing with a few exciting things back then! The “Romantic Era” of ballet was fading a bit, making way for a more streamlined, classical style, still filled with beautiful form and poise. Imagine a world of grand jetes, soaring arabesques, and elegant pirouettes - stunning!

If you were lucky enough to see a show in the early 1930s, you would have seen dancers in more streamlined and pared-back tutus. These beautiful creations were usually made of silk and gauze – just a bit more elegant and understated, if you can imagine that! It was still all about flowing movement, but a little less flouncy.

It's this sort of elegant silhouette I have totally recreated for this week's limited edition pink-hued collection - think delicate layers of tulle, carefully gathered with that soft pouffe effect around the hips. Trust me, you'll feel every inch the 1930s ballerina – très chic indeed!

The Shows of 1933 – Who Stole the Show?

If you’re thinking about stepping into the time machine, Darling - you need to book those tickets to a few of the top ballet houses! Just imagine you’re all done up, rocking a stunning ensemble - a fabulous pair of high-heeled slippers (I simply love these shoes!) a classic top - something off-the-shoulder, you know - a little lace perhaps, all pulled together with a spectacular pink tulle tutu! Oh la la, what a vision, wouldn't you agree?

Here's a glimpse at what’s making the rounds:

1. Ballet Russes: Now, this is a true ballet legend, They were bringing their stunning productions all over the world. We’re talking legendary ballerinas, gorgeous costumes, and performances that took everyone’s breath away! Now that's what I call a performance!

2. The Royal Ballet: The company, born as the Vic-Wells Ballet in 1931, is going from strength to strength. I just adore how this is an evolution, not a revolution – making such a dramatic mark on the history of dance and fashion with such poise! It is said they were all set to unveil the incredible masterpiece “Swan Lake” this very year. Imagine watching this, dearie! It’s an absolute classic for a reason!

3. London’s Covent Garden: If you’re heading to London, there’s one place that can’t be missed, Covent Garden, London. Back then it was THE home of British ballet! Every single show sold out - the audience just loved it.

I’ll be getting on that train – well, the time machine, darlings - first thing tomorrow to take it all in! I am always soooo excited for those premiere shows! This will be a show-stopping tour! You can follow along all week! I'm planning to do some live performances and 'gramming some serious ballerina #OOTDs, darling. Don’t worry, you’ll have my daily fashion diary – of course - all the gossip and some wonderful snippets from my performances, my outfit inspiration from the history of ballet!

The Ballet Style:

Here’s my secret for keeping your outfits and style just that little bit on point! When it comes to these classical times, there's a whole lotta focus on those limbs, darlings! think lots of soft, swirling tutus for elegant steps, gorgeous movement, and really letting those dancers shine. A bit like me!

If I can’t bring the 1930s to life with my clothing designs, I can surely try and match the elegance! A real must-have is a flowing tutu – we’re not talking about full, bouncy skirts like we see in modern ballet - just a gentle hint of fullness with delicate, graceful layers! It has that beautiful silhouette - slim and flattering - showing off the form in the most wonderful way!

It’s all about creating that perfect line, which really works well with ballet's classic dance styles! You'll often see a flowing gown over that slimmer tutu!

It really makes me think about how even these classics make such a statement in style. The evolution of fashion is so fascinating. Ballet style always gives a perfect reference for grace and sophistication - I will say that! And these classic silhouettes are absolutely timeless!

1933’s Pink Hues?

You all know me darling! Now you’re going to ask me: Was pink *everywhere? Well... this time it's a bit of a pink tragedy, darlings. I just cannot bear to think that my beloved colour was a little neglected. I have a feeling these ballet queens were sporting more subtle shades!

Maybe it was just a trend… And what a shame if my love was on standby at this point! There will be a day, my lovelies, when all of fashion will fall to pink's sweet caress!

Keep Twirling

Well, darling dears, it’s time for me to be off! Tomorrow I’m on a train trip to 1933 and we can get up close and personal with the most divine designs! I can't wait to find the inspiration behind those amazing tutu shapes from 1933! I'm going to bring some extra fabric so I can collect the finest scraps and maybe try my hand at some 1933 ballet style reconstruction – for a #PinkTutuTake! You'll have to follow along!

That's all, my lovely lovelies! I am off to dream of tutu designs! Until next #TutuTuesday! Keep those pink tutus twirling, my dears!

Lots of pink love,
