TutuTuesday #5309: A Dance Back to 1933!
Hello lovelies! Emma here, your resident tutu enthusiast, and welcome back to another fabulous #TutuTuesday! Today, we're taking a trip down memory lane, boarding a plush carriage (I adore those velvet seats!) and heading to the magical world of ballet in the year 1933.
It’s a funny thing, travelling back in time, especially when you're looking for fashion inspiration. The tutus, oh darling, the tutus were simply divine! Think airy tulle, cascading tiers, and intricate embroidery. But unlike our modern-day creations that allow for full spins and grand jetés, the tutus of this era were slightly less... flexible.
Don't get me wrong, they were beautiful, almost like the kind of dream you'd have after a scrumptious slice of Victoria sponge. Picture pleats upon pleats, graceful swirls of fabric creating a romantic, whimsical silhouette. The ballet scene in 1933 was full of delicate, floating figures, and the tutus embodied that ethereal beauty. Think of a beautiful butterfly taking flight.
Now, while the fashion was exquisite, 1933 wasn't just about pretty tutus and delicate moves.
September 26th, 1933, was a Tuesday, just like today! Can you believe it?
And what was happening on this special Tuesday? Well, for the ballet enthusiasts, The Royal Ballet (then known as The Vic-Wells Ballet) was busy showcasing their talents in London. And I couldn't imagine anything more delightful than attending one of their performances!
Imagine, a packed theatre, a hushed atmosphere as the lights dim, the air thick with anticipation... then the curtain rises and ballerinas in those enchanting tutus take to the stage. The grace, the strength, the elegance... I can practically hear the hushed gasps from the audience, and smell the delicious scent of jasmine from the bouquet thrown upon the stage for the prima ballerina!
But here's a little secret I learned during my travels... the ballerinas of the time wore a different sort of costume when they weren't performing. Just like today, they'd don their practice wear to hone their technique. Can you imagine the contrast? From elaborate, embroidered tutus to the plain practicality of their daily routines, just fascinating!
Of course, a trip down memory lane isn't complete without mentioning the fabulous shopping opportunities available in 1933! It was the era of elegance and fine fabrics, silk, satin, and the ever-so-glamorous sequins! You simply couldn't go wrong. A little touch of sparkle is all it took to turn any dress or top into a fashion masterpiece, a testament to the ingenuity and sophistication of the time.
Now, you might be thinking, Emma, where can I get my hands on one of these incredible 1933 tutus?
Well, darling, there's a secret: while you won't find the exact same ones in a store, inspiration is everywhere! Vintage clothing shops and online retailers hold treasures, you just have to discover them! But more importantly, it's the design aesthetic, the spirit of the era that really counts. Take those delicate tulle fabrics, add a touch of lace or delicate embellishment, and voila! You have a beautiful tribute to the glamorous days of 1933.
The beauty of fashion, just like the magic of ballet, is its timeless elegance. No matter the era, the beauty of form, movement, and artistry continues to enchant us all! And darling, don’t forget the pink!
See you next week, for another delightful journey into the wonderful world of #TutuTuesday!
Until then, wear pink, wear your tutus proudly, and be fabulous!
Lots of love, Emma.
