Tutu Tuesday #5315: Back in Time with a 1933 Twist!
Hello darlings! It’s your favourite pink tutu wearing ballerina blogger, Emma, back again with another #TutuTuesday and another fabulous journey into the history of the ballet tutu! This week we're whisking ourselves back to 1933! Ooh, just imagine the elegant dresses and stylish hairstyles of the era. So much glamour!
Now, darling, as you know, my time travel skills are pretty amazing! I've waltzed with the greats in Paris, hopped onto the stage in New York, and sipped tea with royalty in London. It’s all thanks to my ability to spin my tutus, twirl my worries away, and tap my feet to the rhythm of history!
And guess where my tutus have brought me this week? That’s right! I'm back in glorious London for a little cultural jaunt, courtesy of my trusty time travel suitcase and some magical twirling! It's such an incredible time in London for ballet and theatre – it's literally blooming everywhere!
Right now, the bright lights are shining on the London Coliseum for the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo, showcasing their beautiful dancers with some truly mesmerising ballets like "Aurora's Wedding," "Schéhérazade" and the classic "Le Carnaval"! Can you imagine those gorgeous tutus?
If I wasn’t so excited about the Coliseum I would be enjoying the Royal Opera House! Yes darling, this is a true golden era for ballet – and it’s thanks to the magnificent Marie Rambert! This visionary choreographer is bringing new styles and approaches to the stage at her own, fabulous Ballet Rambert! It's such an exciting time for innovation, and she's inspiring everyone with her modern interpretations of dance! Imagine her dancers on stage, fluttering their delicate tutus to music that’s almost cutting edge for its time. How lovely, how very, very avant-garde.
There’s such a beautiful energy about this city that makes you want to grab your pink tutu, head straight for the nearest dance studio, and let your body twirl! It’s no surprise this period has produced legendary dancers and choreographers, right? After all, just think of how exciting this moment must have been! Imagine the whispers in the tea rooms and salons of London. "Oh my goodness, did you see Tamara Karsavina dance? Isn’t Diaghilev the most fabulous impresario?". I’d be giddy just thinking of being a part of such an amazing era!
So much more than the Coliseum and the Royal Opera House! You can catch ballets at so many gorgeous, grand theatres, the grand Drury Lane is practically synonymous with theatrical majesty, Covent Garden has a dazzling reputation that is, quite frankly, unsurpassed – the London Palladium offers a unique brand of theatrical magic that always keeps the crowds on their toes. All you have to do is look out for a charming bill or flyer and off you pop to a magnificent evening.
Just yesterday, I spilled out onto Covent Garden after watching the Ballet Russe at the Coliseum, completely in love with the stage, its magical twinkling, and all the glorious dance and theatre magic it brought to life.
My darling friends, the beautiful atmosphere really was simply electric. Such amazing clothes, such fashionable gentlemen! Oh, if you only knew! It was just a dazzling, elegant and fabulous display, a parade of shimmering silks and feather boas right outside Covent Garden itself! Everyone from shop girls to noblewomen, all decked out in their finery.
Speaking of finery! Where did I find the perfect dress to complete this magical afternoon of culture, shopping and wonder? Well darling, you wouldn’t believe the treasure I uncovered, at a little boutique tucked away in Covent Garden – just down that tiny passage from the Theatre Royal. It was all lace, pink taffeta and tiny rosebuds!
My time here is quickly coming to an end, I must go find that train back to Derbyshire – to the warm fire and my lovely mum and that wonderful ballet class later in the week at the school. It's such a wonderful moment for London. You can feel the excitement bubbling around. It’s almost contagious!
However, before I bid you a fond adieu darling friends, let’s not forget that we need to share this amazing moment with the world. Let's make our voices heard. Because remember, wearing a tutu is all about joy, beauty, freedom! Let's put on our best pink tutus and spread the love of ballet and of dancing. I think a #pinktutuflashmob in London would be just the ticket, don't you? Oh what a delightful idea – to have a whole troop of us with pink tutus filling the Royal Opera House or maybe just the beautiful gardens in Regent’s Park with an explosion of twirls and graceful movements – maybe a bit of pirouette in front of the Buckingham Palace gates too, wouldn’t that be something! It wouldn’t be too bold would it? We need to make this world a much more elegant place and tutus make all the difference! Well darling, until next time it’s goodnight from this ballerina blogger - your time traveling pink tutu advocate - Emma !
