Tutu Tuesday: Twirling Through the 1930s! đ©°đ
Hello my darlings, and welcome back to Pink-Tutu.com! Itâs your favourite fashionista here, Emma, and today's #TutuTuesday is taking us on a whirlwind journey to 1933. Buckle up, loves, as we're about to embark on a voyage of tutus through time! âš
Post Number: 5320
As I mentioned in my last post (youâre still reading, right?), I just adore using my time travelling abilities to bring you fabulous glimpses into ballet history. After all, our gorgeous tutus have a tale as captivating as a prima ballerinaâs grand jetĂ©!
So, what was happening in the world of ballet in December 1933, you ask? Well, darlings, let me tell you, the stage was absolutely bursting with elegance and glamour.
We were still knee-deep in the Romantic era â a time where tutus were becoming oh-so-essential for a ballerina's repertoire. And just like the colours of a blossoming cherry tree in spring, the variety of colours for those fabulous tutus was exploding!
Remember my little pep talk on âThink Pink!â in last week's post? Well, you're gonna adore hearing this: Pink was already starting to gain momentum! Think of it as a blushing, sweet whisper against the background of traditional white and the luxurious shimmer of gold. Youâve just got to imagine it: delicate pink tulle billowing in the theatre air, a sweet and dreamy hue that captured the hearts of audiences.
Speaking of audiences, let's whisk ourselves to Paris, darlings! 1933 saw the debut of a ballet that would steal hearts everywhere. âLa Symphonie Fantastiqueâ by Serge Diaghilevâs Ballet Russes! The whole Parisian scene was utterly captivated!
You wouldnât believe the fashion. The ladies were flaunting gowns of shimmering silk and lace â so inspiring! I just love the elegance of the era and how the costumes mirrored the beautiful designs on tutus. Such graceful, fluid movements in a swirling symphony of colours!
But the enchantment didn't stop there. Over in London, my fellow Brits were going wild for "Giselle," a romantic ballet that showcased some seriously dramatic tutu designs. Imagine this: soft, ethereal tulle in white, delicately gathered and ruffled, capturing the ghostly sorrow of the character. Iâm almost picturing the tragic yet breathtaking scenesâŠa true theatrical treat for the ages!
Meanwhile, on this very date â December 12th, 1933 â in the heart of London's Theatreland, there was a truly exceptional ballet performance. Now, darlings, letâs take a little detour to chat about something you absolutely need to know: The "Royal Opera House"! Now, this is not just your run-of-the-mill theatre; itâs practically the most legendary spot in all of ballet history, right in the heart of Covent Garden! Just think about all those stories in the brick and mortar, from the stars of the 1800s to the modern ballet icons of today.
Just picturing myself with a little feather boa, dancing through the streets, before hopping into a grand carriage for a fabulous night out at the Royal Opera HouseâŠmy dear! Letâs not forget that iconic architecture! It is truly a masterpiece. And letâs not forget all those amazing dancers who graced the stage with such grace and elegance. Oh, darling, those memories would truly make your tutu twirl!
But the glamour didn't stop there. Fashion houses were bustling with excitement, designing outfits that would become the talk of the town. Youâll have to excuse me if my mind is swirling â there are just so many captivating threads! Think, my dear, the iconic sleekness of the '30s! Just envision flowing fabrics, glamorous lines, and a pinch of art deco flair - perfect for taking your inner ballerina's wardrobe to new heights!
You can see where Iâm coming from here, right? Weâve got this gorgeous art deco design merging with ballet and with those wonderful, fluid lines - this, my darlings, is fashion with a real point of view. I don't think I'll ever be over these times; they simply brim with captivating inspiration.
Now, my dear, let's take a step back from the stage and focus on the fabric that has captured the hearts of dancers and fashionistas alike. My obsession with tulle is definitely a secret I will not be keeping, so buckle up! The development of tutus was truly revolutionizing. And 1933 was an important year for a little something called "nylon." This material changed everything! Gone were the heavy fabrics that hindered movement and didnât flow as beautifully! Instead, we had a lightweight, almost magical material, perfectly sculpted to showcase those stunning pirouettes and gracefully flowing tutus. It truly feels as if ballerinas are taking flight! And letâs face it, what is more inspiring than seeing those beautifully layered tulle layers swirling as our favourite ballerina twirls and leaps across the stage?! It's enough to make your heart skip a beat and send shivers of delight up your spine, darlings.
Oh, darling, before I run out of time, let's talk a little about the tutu of the moment â the romantic tutu! Imagine billowing layers of airy tulle flowing from the hips â so absolutely lovely, my dear! It just captured the whimsical spirit of the time. That was absolutely a highlight of the era, those lovely ballerina dancers looking like fairy tales on pointe! And of course, no romantic tutu would be complete without the charming detail of tiny flowers and pearls woven in for that added dose of elegant charm.
Now, before I whisk myself off on my next time-traveling adventure (I'm just brimming with ideas, darlings!), I wanted to leave you with a few extra little tutu tidbits for this weekâs blog post!
- My Pink-tutu.com Favourites:
This week's spotlight shines on a delightful little dance shop I discovered in the 1930s. âThe Dance Boutique," it's called. What a lovely shop, darling, complete with hand-sewn tutus and even a little atelier where I can design and create my own unique tutu! You can almost feel the energy of the space.
And remember, my darling, for that quintessential '30s glam, pair your fabulous tutus with stunning art deco jewellery! Just add some stunning diamonds, beautiful gemstones, or lovely, geometric designs to your attire - oh, those bold designs just never disappoint!
2. The Tutu Tuesday Trend Spotter:
I can just see how my fashionable sisters, even back then, wouldâve loved this. "Pink Tulle â Oh La La!", theyâd say. Yes, darling, the trend was a soft embrace of colour in a stunning blend of elegance. Those blush tones, the softness of peach â what's not to adore? We are witnessing the beginning of a colour story here.
