#TutuTuesday: A Blast from the Past - Ballet Tutu History - 2nd January 1934! π©°β¨π
Hello darlings, and welcome back to my #TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History blog! It's Emma here, your resident pink-tutu-wearing time traveler, and I'm absolutely thrilled to be back with you all. This week, we're taking a trip back to 2nd January 1934, and trust me, the tutus we'll be discussing will have you saying, "Oh, the times they are a-changin'!"
A Day in the Life... Back Then! π°οΈ
Today, we're stepping back in time to a world where the flapper era is in the rearview mirror, and the fashion world is embracing a new sense of glamour. Think long, sleek dresses, vibrant colours, and, of course, the elegant grace of ballet. Speaking of ballet, the dance world in 1934 was bubbling with excitement!
Let's head to London's Covent Garden where a stunning production of "Swan Lake" graced the stage. The Royal Ballet Company, under the direction of the legendary Ninette de Valois, showcased the beauty of ballet to enthralled audiences. Now, wouldn't it have been utterly divine to be part of the audience? Just imagine those velvet seats, the air buzzing with anticipation, and the hush of excitement before the curtain rises. A perfect way to spend a chilly January evening!
Fashionable Times & Tutu Evolution! π
Let's delve into the tutu's world! This was a period where the classical ballet tutu, with its layered tulle, was evolving. The Romantic tutus of the 1800s were still popular, but new styles were taking shape. Imagine those gorgeous layers of shimmering tulle swirling and dancing on the stage!
I had the most marvellous time traveling to Paris just before Christmas, where I attended the iconic "Les Ballets Russes" by Serge Diaghilev. Oh my! Their tutus were just breathtaking! Diaghilev's vision was revolutionary, inspiring new artistic freedom with tutus. Bold colours, intricate patterns, and innovative cuts were making their way onto the stage, marking a pivotal moment in tutu design. It was pure theatrical magic!
Of course, tutus weren't just on the stage back then! In the era of glitz and glamour, women were embracing the whimsical spirit of the ballet, adding a touch of tulle and sparkle to their everyday wear. You might have seen some charming tutus worn by stylish ladies as an undergarment, adding a touch of romance to their elegant dresses. Don't you just love how the tutu can elevate even the simplest outfit? It's the magic of tulle, darling! π
My Tutu Adventures
Speaking of tutus, I found the most adorable antique tutu at a vintage shop in Paris just the other day! It's made of delicate, cream-colored tulle, and the trim is simply divine! I paired it with my favourite pair of vintage velvet boots and felt absolutely delightful. And the best part is, this tutu was almost the exact same shade as a ballet I saw last week at the OpΓ©ra Garnier in Paris!
It's quite extraordinary, isn't it, to see how the tutu has transformed and evolved over the decades? It reminds me of my dear Grandma always saying, "A tutu is for every occasion!"
Sharing the Tutu Love!
Remember, I encourage everyone to embrace their inner ballerina and get themselves a tutu. The world is our stage, darlings! Don't hesitate to step outside your comfort zone and add some sparkle and grace to your lives. A little tulle can go a long way, don't you think?
So, for my darling readers, I encourage you to try this:
- Find your favourite pink tutu: We all know tutus come in different colours, but pink, of course, is my absolute favourite! π. Head to your nearest costume shop, a vintage store, or even try sewing your own! The possibilities are endless!
- Twirl! There's something truly liberating about twirling in a tutu! And don't worry, there are no judges! Just enjoy the feel of the tulle as it swishes around you, like a cloud of beautiful, dreamy joy.
