#TutuTuesday: Ballet Tutu History - 9th January 1934 - Post #5324!

Oh, darlings, happy Tuesday! It’s me, Emma, your favourite pink-tutu-wearing time traveller, back again with another juicy bit of ballet tutu history!

This week we’re waltzing our way back to 9th January 1934. Oh, wouldn’t it be wonderful to be in a London theatre on that day, feeling the hush as the curtain rises, the soft strains of the orchestra swelling, and the ballet dancers in their exquisite costumes, swirling like feathers in a breeze?

Right, before we dive into our tutu-filled travels, remember, you can catch all my other posts at www.pink-tutu.com! We're all about that #TutuTuesday life, don't forget to tag me in your pics!

London Calling!

So, where were our tutus on 9th January 1934? Why, the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden, of course! This grand old theatre is practically synonymous with ballet in the UK and around the world, a dazzling, swirling heart of graceful movement and breathtaking talent. The ballet is a captivating and powerful performance. I feel giddy just thinking about the stunning costuming and artistry on show.

The Tutus - They're really something special. Back then, we’re looking at classical tutu designs. Lots of tulle layers, and elegant, form-fitting bodices - these are not your fluffy, modern day tutus, darlings, but more rigid, demanding to dance in, demanding true skill from the dancers. A true ballet dancer would have to have amazing control to even move with a graceful lightness in those structured tutus!

Shopping for Tutu Inspiration!

I always say a day at the ballet isn’t complete without a little shopping spree afterwards. And oh darling, just imagine what wonderful treasures one might find in London on 9th January, 1934!

  • A trip to Liberty’s department store would have been a must. Imagine silk and lace, sequins and tulle, swirling around the shelves in this iconic shop! They’d have had everything for a fashionista to make a grand entrance in the dance hall.
  • Fortnum & Mason, the royal food hall, also would have offered an extravagant range of high-quality fabrics and laces, ideal for adding extra flair to a custom-made tutu.
  • For those needing more specialist fabrics, Sylko, an illustrious fabric shop on Conduit Street, would have held the most exquisite materials from around the world. Their velvet, satin and exquisite lace would have given even the most intricate tutu design a beautiful touch of decadence.

Ah, the shopping opportunities! It truly gives me a little twirl just imagining it all.

What was Happening?

But our trip back in time isn’t just about tutus and shopping, darling! Let's have a little peek at the news on this day.

  • There’s a big political story dominating the headlines - the ongoing crisis in Austria. Imagine the world gripped by a political earthquake.
  • London’s own headlines are taken up with the ever-present topic of unemployment. We’re learning a big lesson about social responsibility, finding solutions for all who are struggling, isn’t it, dear readers?
  • On the more uplifting front, the UK cinema is brimming with exciting new films, ready to draw in huge audiences. There are tales of love, action, adventure, and drama to be enjoyed - something to make us smile.

Remember, these events play out against the backdrop of history. But what stands out for me are the fashion and the dance. There’s nothing quite like a show-stopping ballerina dancing with all that beauty and elegance.

Pink Tutu Ponderings!

Now, I know you might be wondering what I’m wearing for my time travelling adventures on 9th January 1934. Obviously, it's not possible to pack for every era! (You can't travel light when your goal is to encourage everyone to wear pink tutus, darling!). But rest assured, it's going to be a very elegant, sparkly, pink tutu, with the perfect touch of vintage charm.

You're probably thinking I'll be rocking a shorter tutu for this trip, like something you'd see in a glamorous Parisian revue, perhaps? I can imagine some fine, hand-sewn feather accents, perhaps?

Oh, I just adore the freedom of being able to flit through history, seeing what everyone's wearing and letting my own sense of style evolve along the way! Maybe you can guess what the next #TutuTuesday blog is about, darlings! I'll leave you with a hint… what's next, après-ski, flamenco, or a tutu-infused garden party? You tell me!

That’s all from me today, dear readers! Be sure to follow my #TutuTuesday adventures here every week. Until next time, remember - every day’s a good day to wear a tutu. Happy dancing!
