#TutuTuesday: Ballet Tutu History - 1st May, 1934
Hello darlings!
Welcome back to another exciting edition of my #TutuTuesday: Ballet Tutu History! I'm Emma, your resident pink tutu-clad time-travelling fashionista, here to bring you all the juicy details of tutu history! Today we’re going on a fabulous trip back in time, all the way to 1st May 1934, to find out what's happening in the world of tutus!
Time travel with me, lovelies!
As always, we're off on the train to London! (I do love a good train journey, it allows me to sit back, relax, admire the views, and enjoy my favourite pastime - dreaming about the wonderful dresses I will buy next). The English countryside is looking particularly delightful this spring – I simply cannot resist buying a beautiful posy of fresh lavender from the street vendors. Ah, a delightful reminder that the start of May truly is a special time of the year!
Stepping into history…
This month's stop takes us right to the heart of the world’s premier ballet companies, Covent Garden. And believe me darlings, tutus are having a MOMENT! Every single performance in London is absolutely captivating!
This Tuesday sees Margot Fonteyn – my absolute favourite ballerina - gracing the stage in a dreamy, frothy, romantic tutu. Think layers and layers of shimmering tulle in a stunning pale pink - the colour of a perfectly formed rosebud, don't you think? Her performance is simply captivating – the kind of performance that makes you believe in fairytales! The movement is so light and elegant; I can't help but feel inspired by her utter grace!
But the 1930s are all about exploring new designs.
Let's take a step away from Covent Garden, where our dear Margot is making tutus the stars of the show, and take a look at the Parisian dance scene. There we'll find the lovely, and slightly bohemian, short tutus in action. Imagine swirling clouds of light pink, pale yellow, and vibrant baby blue silk flowing with each beautiful twirl. The Parisians are really leading the way, taking ballet to new levels of femininity with their own whimsical interpretations of what a tutu should look like. The layered silhouette, made popular by their new short tutus, gives an air of youthful beauty and adds so much fluidity and freedom to the dancer's movement.
Oh my darling, how do they even make these magical creations?!
Don't you just love how the fabric flows and shimmers, catching the stage lights, creating those ethereal visions of loveliness? I must say, this week, I can’t get enough of the beautiful colour combinations. And those feathers! – feather trim is certainly the epitome of fashion luxury, a touch of playful extravagance. I adore the use of soft velvet ribbons, creating such intricate detail, so delicate! My eyes are practically feasting on these stunning creations!
But of course, all the beautiful garments in the world are no good if there's not a magnificent dance behind them. The joy, beauty, and strength in ballet – that's what truly sets the spirit on fire!
Tutus in the future…
Just wait till you see where the tutus of the future are going! Oh darling, I've been popping between timelines – I don't want to spoil the surprise! But I will say the journey will be utterly delightful - new shapes, new materials, and plenty more glorious pink!
That's all from me this #TutuTuesday, darlings.
