#TutuTuesday: Ballet Tutu History: November 6th, 1934!

Hello dearies! Welcome back to another exciting #TutuTuesday edition of my Ballet Tutu History blog. This is post number 5367! How exciting! Can you believe we're still going strong after all these years? I know you love finding out all about the history of our most beloved fashion accessory, and believe me, there are stories that'll make you squeal with delight. Today, we're setting our time machine to November 6th, 1934.

But first, darling, let's chat fashion. Have you all seen those glorious new frocks with the gorgeous silk sleeves? They're simply divine! I've just picked up a stunning one, and it pairs perfectly with my pale pink tulle tutu – what else? You can't imagine how good I'll look when I'm twirling in this outfit at the Covent Garden ballet! This show, a performance of Swan Lake, has me so excited, the excitement's practically vibrating.

Right, on to our journey into ballet history! 1934...now let's see what fashion magic awaits us. The most exciting news from the ballet world? Oh, it’s that the tutu’s just been undergoing a major evolution! You’ll be delighted to know, darlings, that it’s actually getting shorter, shorter, shorter! This is absolutely fabulous news for us dancers. Imagine the freedom of movement we now have, spinning with just that delicious wisp of tulle billowing around our legs! It's practically flying – the very essence of dance, darling! It's like we are in flight, graceful and elegant! And I bet it's more practical for pirouettes!

This change isn't just a change in length though, the new tutus are starting to feature all sorts of gorgeous decorations, more embellishment, lovely embroidery and sparkly diamantes. Isn't that simply divine? These additions are a tribute to the modern fashion movement. They say fashion, dear, is never stagnant, and here we are proof of it! We ballerinas aren’t the only ones enjoying a fashion evolution. Just look at how chic everyone's dresses are nowadays. I can't wait to start my own clothing line and feature all these gorgeous ideas, wouldn't it be marvellous! I could even design tutus. Now that would be a dream.

Did you know, my dearest dears, that in Paris they are all completely in love with ballet? We’re enjoying something of a golden era for the dance! All the finest artists, singers and performers travel over there to take part in performances. And the dress sense! Oh my! Imagine the glamorous evening dresses, the dazzling jewelry. It’s all a spectacle of shimmering colour and delightful beauty.

To my immense joy, it’s in this decade that ballet started becoming popular amongst the ‘common folk’. Now, it's all the rage with all of us, from aristocrats to humble shop girls. All that time my ancestors devoted to sharing ballet with the masses wasn't for nothing, it’s starting to have the biggest impact on society! Oh, darling, we simply have to give them credit for everything!

Speaking of that, what was actually going on on this very date in history? Well, dear, if you hadn't guessed by the buzz around Paris, the 1934 Grand Prix was being held on the 6th of November, and it's very exciting! Paris will be abuzz with activity. Just imagine the outfits everyone will be sporting. That's enough to send a fashionista like me into a complete frenzy!

Well, darling, as we approach the time I must make my goodbyes. It’s been so lovely chatting about tutu history. I’m off to try my hand at some ballet class, or perhaps a quick bit of shopping. But please, join me next #TutuTuesday for another thrilling glimpse into the fabulous history of the tutu, darlings!

See you next week, my lovelies. Now, who's ready to embrace their inner ballerina and put on their best pink tutu?!
