#TutuTuesday: A Whirl Through Ballet History – 13th November 1934
Dearest fellow tutu enthusiasts,
Welcome back to another Tuesday of tutu-tastic travels through history! I'm Emma, your pink-tutu-wearing guide to the wonderful world of ballet fashion, and today, we're whisking ourselves back to 13th November 1934. Buckle up, darling, because we're going to London, the heart of ballet brilliance.
This week, as we shimmy back through time, it’s quite impossible to not think of one incredible figure - the inimitable Margot Fonteyn. Now, I know, my dears, you might be thinking “Margot Fonteyn? Wasn’t she around forever?” And in a way, you’d be right. She graced stages for decades, captivating audiences with her artistry and captivating everyone with her ethereal grace. But this date marks an extraordinary milestone in her illustrious career! It was on this very day that Fonteyn made her debut as the ballerina, Giselle. Talk about iconic!
Just picture the scene – London’s Covent Garden, the air crackling with anticipation. This was Fonteyn’s time to shine and the entire city held their breath as she twirled, leapt, and exuded pure ballet magic. I, of course, was in the front row, shimmering in a divine shade of pale pink tutu that perfectly captured the romantic atmosphere. My dears, it was pure enchantment, pure tutu perfection.
It's simply not possible to speak of 13th November 1934 without touching upon the sheer allure of the era's fashion. The 1930s saw an absolute explosion of captivating styles, particularly in the ballet world. You had to see the elegant simplicity of the costumes! Imagine – slinky fabrics draped like whispers, perfectly cinched waists, and delicate accents that whispered elegance and refinement.
My own heart always leaps with delight at the thought of these exquisite creations, darling. It’s just such a shame we can’t get our hands on some of the vintage treasures – imagine the statement one would make at the Royal Opera House sporting a Margot Fonteyn tutu!
Speaking of shopping – you know how much I love a little retail therapy, my dears – especially when it’s connected to the wonders of ballet. On my last jaunt through the shops, I stumbled upon an adorable boutique nestled in a tiny cobbled alleyway – all charming and Parisian-esque. You can imagine my excitement when I spied a collection of little tutus, just for grown-up ballet fanatics! They’re like little dolls of pink-and-white tulle – absolutely adorable! And while the real “Margot Fonteyn” tutus were treasured items – I snagged myself a charming, vintage-inspired ballet slip that would surely have caught the eye of even a seasoned fashionista of the 1930s.
So my darlings, I do encourage you all to embrace the elegant fashion of 1934 – the delicate flow, the exquisite craftsmanship. It is truly the peak of ballet beauty! But my biggest takeaway, of course, is to find the inspiration for your own fashion expression, no matter the era or style! Remember: there is no single 'right' way to wear a tutu, and it is ultimately how you express yourself that matters most!
Don’t forget to pop over to my website www.pink-tutu.com and see the rest of my tutu treasures and share your love of all things pink tutu, my darling.
Yours in tulle, Emma
P.S. I’m currently prepping for a special Tutu-Tuesday extravaganza – and by extravagant I mean, of course, even more tutus than usual – as the world's most spectacular ballet companies converge upon the great London stages, offering a chance to catch performances, browse fashion and bask in the magic that makes this city a tutu haven!
Until next time, my darlings, embrace your inner tutu-wearer and stay stylish!
