Tutu Tuesday: A Whirl Through Time!

#5369

Oh, darlings, it’s me, Emma, your favourite pink-clad ballerina blogger, ready to whisk you back through the annals of time with another #TutuTuesday post! Today, my dear readers, we’re venturing all the way back to 20th November, 1934, for a little history lesson on the glorious evolution of the tutu. It’s a Tuesday, and even in those days, tutus were a sight to behold, darling!

As always, I found myself travelling by train for this historical expedition – my carriage is so much chicer than those clunky old trains they used to use. You simply can't beat a train journey – especially one with a view of the countryside. And did I mention it was an absolute dream for the tutu-wearing opportunities? Pink, naturally!

Arriving in New York, I practically vibrated with excitement, for this is the city that truly understands the elegance and magic of ballet, darling. On the 20th of November, 1934, there were some remarkable ballets gracing the stages of the city – I believe "The Nutcracker" was making its rounds. It's simply astounding how far back these ballet traditions stretch, right? The mere thought of those elaborate tutus twirling across the stage, the colours, the graceful movements – simply divine!

Of course, we must mention the Russian Ballet who had been touring the United States for a couple of years before. Their impact on American Ballet was immense - inspiring American ballerinas and fashion alike. Think exquisite colours, dramatic stage designs, and of course, the iconic tutu in all its glorious variations.

Now, let’s travel back in time a little more, shall we? In 1934, the tutus were experiencing their transformation – from the romantic romantic style with full, layered skirts to a more athletic style. Yes, my dears, tutus have come a long way since those early days! Think sleek lines, shorter lengths, and a real emphasis on showcasing the ballerina's movement and athleticism. This wasn't just a mere 'ballet trend', darling - this represented a change in the way we understood ballet itself! It was a dance style emerging as something powerful, dynamic, and incredibly artistic.

Do you know what this tells us, darling? This tells us that tutus have always been fashion icons! From the romantic tutu of the 19th century with its flourishing ruffles to the contemporary look that accentuates the graceful movement - the tutu remains an inspiration for fashion trends, influencing designs in fashion shows, and inspiring designers to incorporate elements of the tutu into everyday clothing!

The fashion scene of 1934 was inundated with inspiration from ballet. You saw skirts flowing like those enchanting tutus, the movement, the lines - a vision of feminine elegance and style. Designers embraced this trend - it was an exhilarating time to be both a dancer and a fashion enthusiast!

On that particular November 20th, the shops of New York were bursting with a kaleidoscope of fabrics inspired by those glorious ballet tutus. From luxurious velvets to silk chiffon - it was like every storefront transformed into a tutu-tastic display! Can you imagine?

And it wasn't just the fashion designers. Even ordinary ladies wanted to get a piece of the tutu magic! They twirled and twirled in those pretty ballet-inspired dresses, the ruffles dancing, their steps a bit less graceful than the ballerinas at the opera, but filled with the same love of movement and beauty!

So, my darlings, this is what makes me love this magical, beautiful tutu evolution so much! It embraces every form, style, and shape! Whether you’re spinning around in the latest fashion statement or admiring those legendary tutus on stage - we're all united by the beauty of movement and that feminine, whimsical style of the tutu! And if 1934 shows us anything, it's the ability of ballet and fashion to come together, create art, and captivate our hearts.

I can't wait for you all to come along on my next #TutuTuesday journey - let’s go together and make the world a much more whimsical and delightful place - one pink tutu at a time, darling! Remember to check out my new post next week. Until then, may you all dance like nobody's watching!

With love and twirls,

Emma
