Tutu Tuesday: #5383 - A Peek Into the Glittering Past!
Bonjour mes amies!
It's Tuesday again, and that means it's time to dive into the history of our beloved tutu! This week, my time-traveling tulle has brought me back to the 26th of February 1935, a time when fashion and the ballet world were in a state of utter excitement! Oh darling, just imagine the joy!
You know I adore finding myself amongst the elegant crowds of Paris - a city overflowing with style and grace, the true heartbeat of ballet. Imagine: cobblestone streets echoing with the laughter of Parisians, chic boutiques overflowing with beautiful fabrics and glittering sequins, and the thrill of knowing that just around the corner, the ballet world is about to explode with innovation!
This is a time of major changes for our tutus, my dears! Ballet is moving away from the romanticism of the 19th century, pushing towards a more athletic and modern style. The long, billowing skirts of yesteryear are slowly fading out, replaced by shorter, more manageable versions - ideal for those complex, athletic movements of the new era. Think of the incredible jumps and fouettés that those shortened tutus made possible! Talk about progress!
Of course, just like today, it’s all about the silhouette. These new-wave tutus are making waves on stage, emphasising the dancers’ legs and showcasing their strength and grace, while adding an element of breathtaking artistry. It’s truly an exciting time to be a ballet enthusiast!
As a seasoned time traveler and avid ballerina, I always find it fascinating to discover what was happening on this particular date. This February 26th in 1935, audiences in Paris were enthralled by a performance of "Le Lac des Cygnes," better known as "Swan Lake." Just imagine - that breathtaking, iconic ballet in the Parisian capital! With such renowned performances, the dance world was at a peak. I’m already plotting my trip to witness this enchanting spectacle!
And while the dance world was filled with excitement, fashion was abuzz as well! We’re right at the cusp of a fabulous decade! 1935 marked a period of artistic experimentation - imagine the daring and innovative designs! Imagine how glamorous these ladies must have looked on the streets of Paris - the art-deco flair and the impeccable sophistication! Just wonderful!
The Evolution of Tutu Styles:
Oh, and the tutu evolution continues apace! It's truly an enchanting dance of progress! In 1935, you’ll find the tutu is getting sleeker and tighter. There’s a more streamlined style in play - the traditional romantic tutus of the late 19th century are taking a back seat. You might see hints of a "paquita" tutu making its entrance - a smaller, flatter variation that offered a more streamlined look. I simply adore the evolution of the tutu - it’s just one more reason why I'm so obsessed with this elegant garment!
Where to Find your Parisian Glamour
If you're looking for a hint of 1935 Parisian chic, try searching for pieces with Art Deco details - geometric designs, bold colours and flowing lines will evoke that era's flair!
Don't forget the beautiful silk fabrics that defined this period - try to find blouses with flowing sleeves, soft drapes, and some beautiful satin finishes. The beauty of a Parisian look is in its simplicity and its elegance. Embrace those stunning, feminine styles and make this beautiful era a part of your style!
I know some of you might say that those long tutus of the romantic period are oh so magical, but really, I find the sleeker styles of this decade truly mesmerising! A new age of ballet, a new age of style, and most importantly, a new age of tutu!
So darling, embrace those shortened tutus, get those beautiful silk dresses and scarves flowing, and don't forget, my lovely ladies - PINK is ALWAYS a good idea! Until next time, may your twirls be grand and your smiles as radiant as the brightest lights on stage.
Yours in tulle, Emma
