Tutu Tuesday: A Whirl Through Time - 19th February 1935!

Hello my lovely ballet bunnies! It's Emma here, your resident tutu-obsessed time traveller, back with another delightful journey into the world of ballet history for #TutuTuesday. This week, I've landed myself right in the heart of 1935 - and trust me, the tutus were fabulous! It's amazing how quickly things changed after the roaring twenties! We've landed smack-bang in the middle of the Art Deco period, which for a fashionista like me is like a giant candy floss cloud of glam and glitter! This is post #5382 on www.pink-tutu.com so let's get dancing, darling!

Now, I have to admit, travelling through time is hard work! Honestly, finding the right dress for each era, not to mention making sure my tutu matches, is a whole other performance! But let's face it, there's nothing quite like twirling in a perfect tutu, surrounded by the energy and excitement of another time. And today's time travel adventure takes me to… Paris! Because what could be better than stepping into a Parisien theatre? Especially with the Ballet Russes, or The Ballets Russes as they were originally called, having their big debut a few years before - imagine! Such beautiful dancers with such beautiful tutus. sigh The beauty, the grandeur, the fashion! Honestly, they put me in a right royal good mood just by walking around in the Parisian streets.

Did you know? This is a key year for ballet because the great choreographer Sergei Diaghilev, who'd founded the iconic Ballet Russes back in 1909, sadly died! However, this didn’t mean the ballet’s demise. Far from it! Diaghilev had assembled such an incredible group of talent - artists, designers, and composers - and had created so many breathtaking performances that the Ballets Russes continued after his death, and it was to grow bigger and even more influential over the years to come! They're still touring the globe! I simply adore their costumes, the artistry of their productions, the choreography. Every tutu is just divine! It’s a dream come true to be here for this moment in history.

A Twirling Peek Inside The World Of Fashion:

Oh darling! The clothes are so chic! And you know what I just love about 1935? It’s all about those glorious silhouettes! Everything’s got that gorgeous long, lean, smooth line, giving you that super-elegant, ladylike look. The dresses are skimming and swaying. So beautifully crafted, darling! And the details… just wait until you hear about the details! All those exquisite beads and sequins. We’re talking about flowing bias cuts, sleek, slim, luxurious materials like silk and satin. Imagine yourself with a shimmering pink silk dress, oh la la!

Now, let’s talk about the accessories, my dears:

I've never been so inspired for my own dressmaking! This is a truly sparkly era! The hats! You simply have to get yourself a cute cloche hat - all that swishy feather and veiling. And those shoes! Stiletto heels for every occasion! Oh, it’s heavenly!

Ballet Beauty

So I’m not just talking about those gorgeous tutus on the ballerinas, because the 1930s is the golden age of glamour! If there’s a spotlight anywhere in the world - and especially in the world of ballet - you can be sure a 1930s performer will be right in front of it. And you can't have a ballet performer without a stunning tutu! I’ve seen so many stunning designs today in this world of ballet… I’m ready for my own performance already! There is such aeration and grace and femininity - truly divine!

And that make-up! We’re talking those super-bold brows and killer red lips that look amazing on everybody! All those glamorous lashes, darling! I’m sure they must have used a good hundred tubes of mascara by the time they finish with a makeup session - they look just incredible.

On the Train Tracks!

Now, of course, it wouldn't be a true Tutu Tuesday journey without a dash of train travel. You simply cannot do the glamorous Paris to Derbyshire trip without stopping for a spot of tea and taking a ride on a vintage carriage. Oh the glamour! I just have to capture all this beauty for my blog readers…

My Outfit For The Occasion

Now, you might be wondering what this little ballerina's got on for today’s time travel adventure? Of course it’s a pink tutu, darling! There's absolutely no other choice for a ballerina with a bit of time-traveling wanderlust. My dress, well, it has a beautiful silky feel and that perfect bias cut I was just telling you about. And I’m going full-on glam, of course, because the 1930s deserve all the style you can muster!

So, I've got to be on my way. It's time for another #TutuTuesday dance.

Until next time, remember: wear your tutus with pride and enjoy the whirl of history! And please, let me know if you ever find a pink tutu from 1935 for me! It’s got to be divine.

Yours in pink tutus, Emma.

P.S. Have you caught a ballet recently? And if you haven’t seen the Ballets Russes in action, darling, I recommend it! I hope to bring you another ballet history trip for you all next week.
