#TutuTuesday: A Whirl Through 1935! 🩰
Welcome, darlings, to post #5393 on www.pink-tutu.com! It's a glorious Tuesday, the sun is shining, and the only thing missing is a touch of pink tulle, wouldn't you agree?
As you know, my absolute favourite thing in the whole world is a pink tutu. But not just any pink tutu. They all have a story to tell! This week we're twirling back in time, travelling all the way to 1935 for a glimpse at the fabulous world of ballet in that era! Buckle up, my loves, this journey's going to be a grand one.
It's time to get out your best vintage dresses, darlings. Think silks and velvets, bows and beads, oh and a splash of scarlet! For my travel wardrobe this time, I chose my favourite salmon-pink tutu with an abundance of tulle ruffles - it's a real show-stopper and, if I do say so myself, it just screams "1930s elegance"!
As for transportation, the 1930s are perfect for a good old-fashioned train journey. Just picture yourself sitting by the window, the gentle chug-chug of the engine, your travel companions (the posh lady with her dachshund, and the young couple with a mountain of luggage) all admiring your flamboyant pink ensemble!
Speaking of luggage, my bags are crammed with exciting things, of course! From satin slippers and antique opera glasses to hand-stitched lace gloves and silk hankies, I'm all set to enjoy the ballet in style! I might just whip out my pearl necklace to add a touch of glitz, too.
Now, onto the main event! On the 7th of May, 1935, there were a lot of incredible things happening in the world of ballet!
One exciting tidbit is that the Ballets Russes, a legendary dance company, are giving a series of performances at The Metropolitan Opera House in New York. This company was known for pushing boundaries, bringing colour, drama and a dash of scandalous allure to their productions. I can just imagine the swirling silks and striking colours, the thrilling leaps and impossibly graceful movements.
Meanwhile, across the pond in dear ol' England, our very own Royal Opera House, tucked away in Covent Garden, London, was showcasing some equally remarkable performances. It’s a fantastic space with a truly magnificent auditorium. I always feel a frisson of excitement whenever I step into the grand foyer and I can practically hear the whispers of ballet legends from past eras.
On this date, Londoners could enjoy the captivating talents of the Camargo Society, known for its daring productions. The Camargo Society presented new and innovative works alongside classic ballets, bringing a breath of fresh air to the world of British dance. They truly believed that dance shouldn’t be a static, ancient tradition, but something vibrant and evolving.
Back then, the concept of the ballerina was starting to take a new direction. Think more dramatic movements and powerful figures, not just delicate flowers. Imagine graceful steps infused with powerful, expressive flourishes. This dynamic energy is a real game changer! They also dared to move away from the super strict tutus of old and explored looser and more comfortable styles - talk about fashion-forward!
Now, my dear readers, don’t let your imagination be confined by time. There's so much to admire about the era! In 1935, ballet was just bursting onto the world stage! So remember, darling, no matter when you step into the theatre, there's magic in the air and a story to be told in every pirouette and grand jeté!
#TutuTuesday is just getting started, darlings! Keep your eyes peeled next week for a fascinating trip back in time. Until then, may your days be filled with beautiful twirls and sparkling sequins. And, as always, let your inner ballerina shine bright!
