#TutuTuesday: Ballet Tutu History - 23rd July, 1935 đŸ©°

Greetings, my darlings! Welcome back to another installment of my #TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History series, your weekly dose of everything tutus! This is post number 5404, and today, I’ve travelled all the way back to the summer of 1935! It's sweltering hot here in London, but luckily, the theatre keeps cool. The aroma of lavender sachets and jasmine perfume is heavenly, especially in comparison to the stifling heat outside!

Oh, the things I've seen in this glorious time. It's simply incredible. In this era, the ballet world is brimming with so much creativity and artistry!

Let’s get back to those tutus! Back in the 1930s, the classic, romantic tutu took centre stage! We're talking full, airy layers of tulle that float like a cloud.

You wouldn’t find many pink ones back then - it was the time of white and blush. But even if you did see pink it would be very pale. But that’s what’s so fascinating about fashion history, seeing how things change! Pink has always been a little bit special, a little bit daring, a little bit exciting. It’s no surprise it’s grown into such a huge fashion favourite. Just you wait and see. Pink tutus will soon be everywhere!

Today, the star of the show is, of course, Margot Fonteyn, the epitome of grace and elegance. Just watching her pirouette in a classic romantic tutu is pure poetry in motion! We see the ballerina with an incredibly beautiful, delicate grace. Even though I have to admit I have a sneaky suspicion that all this “delicacy” is very difficult to pull off, especially those tricky steps while being weighed down by layers of tulle!

Now, speaking of the year 1935, what happened on this very date, you ask? Well, dear reader, on 23rd July 1935, the famous playwright, Noel Coward's ‘The Scrounge’ premiered! Oh, what a delight that must have been! One of the characters was described as “dishing up cocktails for the boys,” what a fantastic fashion opportunity. I can picture a pale pink tutu worn by a captivating dancer during the “Cocktails for the Boys” song number - just picture it!

Speaking of fun, on my latest travels, I had the most extraordinary time at a theatrical soirée! There I saw the most beautiful pale blue, silky tutu and an adorable velvet bolero on a fellow dance enthusiast! Such sophistication!

Remember my darlings, there is a pink tutu waiting for every one of you.

And, speaking of my own travels, the train journey here was absolutely splendid! Oh, those plush seats! My train travels always start with a perfectly packed suitcase (including of course a pink tutu - pink is the colour of my world!) and are made all the more exciting by my travel buddy, my darling pug puppy.

Let me share with you some of the things I look for while hunting for the perfect tutu. It's more than just the shape and size, darlings!

Firstly, we look for exquisite fabrics. That delicate touch of hand-stitched, shimmering tulle that catches the light perfectly. It needs to whisper stories of romance and beauty - it’s a story I like to tell every time I twirl!

Next, I check the movement! The perfect tutu must allow for elegant turns, effortlessly lifting high in the air. Those layers need to flow, billow, and dance along with your every step! There should be that beautiful, natural, and exciting flutter to it, don’t you agree?

The perfect tutu needs to complete the picture, don't you think? A tutu should always be worn with confidence, a sprinkle of magic, and an air of whimsical adventure! And if the magic starts to wane, well, I just simply travel back to a time where tutus truly stole the show!

Speaking of magic, this little corner of London is a haven of enchanting performance! If you happen to be visiting this fabulous city in the near future, let’s meet for a visit. And, remember, wear your pink tutus with pride, dear friends, and remember, you’re always welcome to join me for a tutu-tastic adventure, my lovelies!

Until next week!

Love and Tutu Dreams! 💖
