Tutu Tuesday: #5405 - A Step Back in Time!
Welcome back, lovelies! It's Tuesday, and you know what that means… pink tutu time! Today, we're waltzing back to July 30th, 1935, for a peek at what tutus were doing back in the glamorous days of Art Deco. Hold on to your tiaras, darlings, this one's going to be a right doozy!
I hopped off the Orient Express – ahem, a slightly more futuristic version, naturally – at the Gare du Nord in Paris. The City of Lights was shimmering with excitement as always. This was the time for haute couture, where fashion was everything. Everyone wanted to be seen in the latest designs from Dior and Chanel, and trust me, darling, the Parisians knew their tutus!
Speaking of tutus, 1935 was a time of transition for ballet tutus. We’d just had the Ballets Russes sweeping through the world, leaving behind a trail of tutus that were shorter and poufier, highlighting the movement and athleticism of the dancers. You see, the ballerinas back then were so very athletic and strong, yet so graceful. The shorter tutu allowed the audience to appreciate the incredible lengths of their leg work and the complexity of the choreography. Divine, wouldn't you say?
But, let's get this straight: Pink is ALWAYS in style! Don’t get me wrong, those ladies weren’t waltzing around in candy floss hues like mine. 1935 was all about delicate pastels – blush pinks, lilac, even a bit of baby blue. Think soft colours, whispy and ethereal, darling. That's the perfect backdrop for some incredible dance moves. Imagine it – the ballerina twirling under the theatre lights, the colour blending into a beautiful blurred canvas of movement. Pure enchantment!
Speaking of the theatre, let’s talk about The Bolshoi Ballet! The Bolshoi had a packed schedule back then – think Swan Lake and Giselle. Honestly, you can bet your bottom dollar those ballerinas were giving the tutus a good workout. Imagine those gorgeous tulle skirts twirling through the air in the Dance of the Little Swans – pure magic!
Of course, this wasn't just about professional dancers. 1935 saw the birth of Ballet Class. Those beautiful Parisian women wanted to channel their inner ballerina and they definitely made time for a petit pas or two! Just picture those glamorous ladies – in their Parisian chic dresses, some even sporting silk scarves and gloves – stepping into the studio, the smell of rose-scented lavender wafting in the air, divine! They all would have had that lovely little dancer’s carriage, a confident stride and their chin held high, showing their perfect form and posture, like true Parisian chic! They just had that ‘Je ne sais quoi!’. And imagine the fun they had, tumbling and piquéing their way to better posture, grace, and perhaps a more toned silhouette, all the while rocking that pastel coloured tutu. Honestly, my heart sings for these amazing, inspiring, creative, stylish ladies!
So, 1935 was a time for elegant lines, delicate pastel shades and most importantly… an appreciation for the exquisite beauty and grace of dance. That’s something that, let’s be honest, has always been in style!
Now, darling, before you run out to try and get yourself a delicate 1935-style tutu, it's not easy finding one like that! But we can definitely learn from the elegance of the past. This Tutu Tuesday, why not try embracing your inner ballerina with some delicate pink makeup and a dash of Parisian flair? You don't need a tutu to channel your inner goddess, love! A simple outfit with a pink ribbon or even a pink nail polish will do!
I’d love to hear your thoughts, darling! Have you been inspired by our fashion flashback to 1935? What's your favourite tutu look? Don't forget to share your pink tutu snaps using the #TutuTuesday hashtag, and keep those stylish pink tutus spinning! Until next week, darling, keep it rosy!
Love, Emma xx
