#TutuTuesday: A Twirl Through Time - October 22nd, 1935!

Hello darlings, and welcome back to my little corner of the internet, where pink is always in fashion and tutus are a way of life! Today marks another #TutuTuesday, and wouldn't you know it, my trusty time machine whisked me back to a rather glamorous era: the 1930s! Now, before you think I'm indulging in a little dramatic flair, I assure you this was no ordinary decade. The 30s, my dears, were the era where ballet took centre stage, both literally and figuratively, across the world!

Just picture it: a dazzling performance at the Paris Opera House, with the elegant, sweeping steps of the Ballet Russe. A bevy of beauties dressed in the most exquisite, intricate tutus, shimmering like starlight. Ah, such elegance and grace!

And speaking of tutus, today we're venturing back to the glorious year of 1935, the 22nd of October to be precise. And what better place to be than the grand metropolis of New York City! It was here, at the glittering Metropolitan Opera House, that a legendary event unfolded - the American premiere of the ballet "The Nutcracker"!

Oh, my dears! The music, the costumes, the pure magic! This was more than just a performance; it was a symphony of colours and emotions, the very essence of Christmas magic swirling on stage. And can we talk about the tutus? They were, simply put, divine! Flowing, billowing clouds of tulle, adorned with shimmering sequins and dazzling snowflakes โ€“ a sight that sent shivers down my spine!

Speaking of "The Nutcracker," let's rewind a little bit to talk about the rise of this classic. We owe a big thank you to a truly visionary choreographer, Marius Petipa, whose intricate choreography truly brought the fairytale to life. This incredible talent, coupled with the breathtaking set design by a visionary like Igor Stravinsky, who masterfully composed the enchanting score for the ballet - oh my! It all comes together to create an unforgettable performance.

Back in 1935, "The Nutcracker" truly put the spotlight on tutus! From the delicate, "snowflake" tutus of the Snow Queen to the charming sweetness of the Sugar Plum Fairy's layered gown โ€“ they were all an absolute delight! Now, you may be wondering about this specific date in 1935, the 22nd of October. Well, for ballet lovers, this day is all about anticipation, a gentle whisper of "The Nutcracker" coming soon. But there's much more to this day! It was also the birthday of a remarkable figure in the world of fashion โ€“ Elsa Schiaparelli!

Yes, my dears, the iconic designer who revolutionised fashion in the 30s with her audacious creations! Her influence was felt far and wide, from the red carpet to the theatre, and even our very own tutus were influenced by her daring, bold designs. She wasn't afraid to experiment, to break the mold, and her designs, with their bold colors and sculptural silhouettes, echoed the spirit of the times โ€“ daring, glamorous and oh-so-fashionable!

Think about it, you can see her daring designs woven through ballet costumes in the 30s โ€“ think of the exaggerated pleats and dramatic layering in the costumes that mirrored Elsa's trailblazing ideas! And, wouldn't you know it, I just adore how the tutus of this era often played with different shades of pink!

While exploring this enchanting era in time, I found myself at a grand London ball where tutus weren't just limited to ballet performances! Oh, the thrill of it all! Imagine this โ€“ swirling clouds of pink tulle transforming a woman's everyday dress into an elaborate ball gown, creating a symphony of movement and enchantment. A perfect testament to the versatility and allure of the tutu, both on stage and off. You see, the tutu isn't just about a performance or an event, it's about an attitude, a feeling, a statement! And, of course, I must confess my little ballerina heart beats a little faster for all the charming tea parties and evening soirees where the enchanting pink tutu takes center stage.

So, darling, when we're caught in the throes of time, don't let any stuffy "fashion rules" stop you from twirling into an occasion in a gorgeous pink tutu. Youโ€™ll find your own fairytale waiting for you, full of grace and charm, because darling, when you slip on a tutu, youโ€™re not just wearing a piece of clothing, you're embracing your inner ballerina! Donโ€™t forget, you can always find your perfect pink tutu on www.pink-tutu.com - you won't be disappointed. I'm off to see a ballet! Catch you next Tuesday!

Yours truly,

Emma
