#TutuTuesday: A Dash of Pink for a December Delight! (Blog Post #5427)

Hello darlings! It's Emma here, your favourite tutu-loving time traveller, and today we're going on a pink-hued adventure through time, all the way back to December 31st, 1935! Oh, my! This was a time when tutus were reaching new heights of dazzling beauty, a time when ballerinas glided across the stage in clouds of ethereal elegance, a time I simply have to share with you lovely lot!

This time travelling tutu enthusiast just got back from a thrilling ballet trip in Vienna, and let me tell you, the costumes were absolutely breathtaking! It's been years since I was last in the beautiful Austrian capital and the gorgeous buildings, amazing cafes and dazzling opera houses were a true treat for the senses. Now, you know I love my pink, and my recent travels have inspired a very special pink-tinted post for #TutuTuesday today. So, strap yourselves in, you delightful readers, for we're taking a whirlwind trip into the history of the tutu and, just like the ballet dancers I admire so much, we’ll twirl through time to learn all about its journey!

Let’s travel back in time!

When we talk about tutus in 1935, we’re diving headfirst into a glorious time for classical ballet! Now, we've talked before about Marie Taglioni and the birth of the tutu back in 1832. At this point in history, The Romantic Era is going strong. I love these elegant longer, flowy tutus! They gave dancers a sense of lightness, freedom, and they sparkled on stage. And can you imagine the sheer amount of tulle that was used? It just makes me dream of whipping up my own magnificent tulle masterpiece back in my time travel studio. But alas, I'll have to wait until next time!

Let’s have a closer look at our beautiful 1935 tutus

  • The length: This is what really caught my eye! Ballet costumes back then were starting to embrace a slightly shorter silhouette. Imagine these tutus like elegant and enchanting *poodle skirts. The tutu length started to shift towards the *knee, maybe just above in some designs! Oh, the graceful swirling!
  • Layers, Layers, Layers! They just love a good layer of tulle and we love them for it! Tutus in 1935, just like a fluffy cupcake became increasingly layered and lavish -think multiples of tulle piled up, creating a stunning cloud of tulle around each dancer! Now that's my cup of tea. A whimsical swirl with every twirl!
  • *The Colour Palette! *I love to see all the colours on stage - even pink!! Ballet companies were exploring a beautiful spectrum, going beyond the classic white to include rich creams, pale blues and the deepest of reds, bringing their stories to life with a captivating touch. You just had to be there, watching them spin under the warm lights, with the sheer drama of their colours, to understand the captivating energy they emanate!

And oh, don’t forget the corsage! That perfect piece of fabric that graces the bodice. It gives every outfit a touch of class, with delicate embellishments that add an extra flair to each performance. It was about perfection. Ballet companies across the globe put great detail into creating these masterpieces! It's all about the details, isn't it?

You’re looking at a glamorous era of ballet!!

You see, darling, all those delicate details - they came together to form the ultimate ballet wardrobe. These breathtaking garments not only enhanced the ballerinas’ movement, but also showcased the powerful elegance and grace of the art of ballet. As they danced across the stage, their costumes seemed to become an extension of their stories, a living tapestry of the narrative that was unfolding in front of our eyes. And that, my lovelies, is the magic of the tutu, a piece of costume that never fails to enchant, enthrall and captivate.

But, it wouldn’t be #TutuTuesday without a whimsical addition to our discussion! As I mentioned, I travelled to beautiful Vienna, which is famous for being a musical capital! My trip took me to one very special shop, just a hop, skip and a jump from the theatre district, called Fuchs. This enchanting little place - *a haven for vintage fashion! They sell beautiful old clothing and jewellery, and it's overflowing with inspiration! * And it's right where I found the most magnificent *pink satin scarf with sparkling sequins and lace detailing. You guessed it, darlings! This was going straight into my wardrobe! I simply can’t wait to pair it with a tulle masterpiece. Oh, the looks we’ll create!

But the fun isn’t over yet, because my adventures are still ongoing! And where do you think I am headed next, darlings? I'm thinking about a trip to France! Paris! Now that is a place every ballerina dreams of visiting. Just imagine the theatres!* I could spend hours getting lost in those historic buildings! Maybe a performance at The Opéra Garnier - that's an *absolute must. But I do need to figure out the logistics of time travel to Paris. That takes a bit of planning. And who knows, perhaps I'll stumble upon a tutu collection of some vintage shop there as well. Maybe one in delicate pastels to complement my new scarf! The possibilities are endless!

I hope my journey back to December 31st, 1935, filled your heart with joy, wonder and a whole lot of tutu-inspired excitement! Now, don't forget, my beautiful dancers! Make sure you have your pink tutus ready to twirl! Stay pink and sparkly!

Until next week, my dearest readers!

*Yours always, *

Emma
