Tutu Tuesday #5443: A Step Back to 1936: The Ballet Boom of the '30s!
Hello my lovely tutu enthusiasts! It's Emma here, your resident pink tutu aficionado, and today we're taking a little trip back in time! Buckle up, buttercups, because we're hopping on the express train to the glamorous world of 1936, a time of stunning tutus, incredible ballerinas, and, yes, some delightful historical quirks.
As always, my journey back through time is fuelled by my undying passion for ballet, so this week's #TutuTuesday finds me stepping into the shimmering world of 1930s ballet. The era of sleek silhouettes, graceful movements, and some truly stunning costumes - it's truly a delight for my eyes (and tutu-loving heart).
Today is April 21st, 1936. Can you believe it's actually the birthday of a dear friend, a real legend in the world of dance - Dame Margot Fonteyn! If you haven't seen her pirouettes, then get on the internet pronto! And I'm not the only one who loves her, this year's Royal Opera House programme features a celebration of her life and legacy, which proves, just in case you needed further confirmation, that Dame Margot remains an icon to this day.
The 1930s was an absolute golden age for ballet. Ballerinas like Alicia Markova (another personal favourite!), were dazzling audiences and breaking boundaries. This period marked the true emergence of the 'ballerina' as a symbol of elegance and strength. Think flowing, billowing skirts, beautifully structured bodices, and some seriously spectacular stagecraft. And yes, of course, plenty of tutus! These aren't your dainty, little tea party tutus, either. Think voluminous, multi-layered tulle creations, with bold and extravagant details. The idea was to make a statement, and they most certainly did!
Fashion on PointeIt's not just the ballet performances that are dripping in glamour. Oh no, the 1930s were a whole vibe, my friends! Imagine chic Parisian boutiques with ladies adorned in shimmering cocktail dresses and feather boas, their hair coiffed to perfection. The era embraced femininity and sophistication, with everything from the clothes to the architecture channeling elegance and grace. This isn't just some frivolous trend, it's a testament to the enduring allure of a look that transcends time.
It's a look that speaks directly to my inner fashionista, so if you can imagine it, of course, my outfit today is as on-point as it can be! Think: a pink tutu that sweeps the floor, shimmering with sequins and embroidered flowers. My hair? Well, I had to channel the era, darling, so I've added some perfectly placed curlers and adorned it with a dazzling feather boa for good measure. You know the saying - go big, or go home!
Speaking of going places, we're about to hop on the train back to London to catch an absolutely stunning performance at the Royal Opera House. But first, we've got a quick pitstop at Liberty's in London's Regent Street. Can you believe it's a store for everything! Clothes, accessories, furniture - they have it all. Itโs a haven for everything chic and fashionable, so of course we have to pop in to pick up a few fabulous accessories for the show.
Imagine my delight when we reach the stage at the Royal Opera House. The lights are low, the orchestra is tuning, and the excited chatter of the audience fills the air. And wouldn't you know it, there's already a woman behind me dressed in a pink tutu!. We have to agree that it is quite fabulous and my mission of everyone wearing a pink tutu has come one step closer! This is the magic of ballet, and of the 1930s - the transformative power of a single moment, a shared experience.
Tutufying Your Own StyleSpeaking of transformations, let's get back to you and your tutu journey! Remember, my lovely ladies, embracing your inner ballerina doesn't need a fancy stage, a massive theater, or a troupe of dancers! Your life is your own stage. Just take a moment to dance with your heart.
It could be whipping up your most decadent dessert (or maybe a ballet inspired cocktail? A pink margarita, anyone?). Or simply taking a long, meandering walk through a park, feeling the air dance through your hair. Maybe even just a fabulous spin in a twirling skirt. Whatever brings that graceful, playful, and most importantly, fun element into your everyday! I believe in you - I know you've got this! Don't forget, you donโt need a reason to embrace the magic of the tutu โ it's a reason in itself.
So remember, you lovely ladies: even as we dance into the future, we mustn't forget the powerful lessons of the past. It's about celebrating individuality, pushing boundaries, and finding beauty in the smallest details, all with a touch of pink-tutu magic, of course!
Keep those twirling steps coming, my dear readers, and don't forget to join me next week for another edition of #TutuTuesday - where we'll continue to explore the timeless story of the tutu and celebrate its ever-evolving role in the history of fashion, dance, and, most importantly, life.
Until then, stay fabulous, my darling tutu-enthusiasts!
Love,
Emma
