#TutuTuesday: A Blast from the Past! (Post #5494)

Hello, darlings! It’s your favourite pink tutu-clad time-travelling blogger, Emma, back with another captivating instalment of Ballet Tutu History!

This week, we’re whisking ourselves back to the 13th of April, 1937, a day just bursting with vibrant life! Think shimmering satin, swirling tulle, and a dancefloor filled with joy…because today, my loves, we’re dipping our toes (figuratively, of course!) into the glamorous world of the Ballet Russes.

I must say, my journey back to 1937 was utterly magical! Imagine: hurtling through the skies in my fabulous pink tutu, and landing in the heart of Paris. Talk about a fashion adventure! This city just exuded elegance and Parisian charm. I can’t even begin to tell you about the stunning boulevards, the delicate pastries, the fabulous department stores – everything felt just so exquisitely French.

And my dears, you simply must hear about the Ballet Russes! They were truly a force of nature – not just in dance, but also in fashion. Their theatrical presentations were groundbreaking. Imagine… dazzling costumes, a whirlwind of colour, a breathtaking stage filled with drama, and breathtaking ballerinas soaring through the air with such graceful precision! Oh, I must say it, these performances left me utterly captivated!

As we step back into the past, let’s talk about the history of the Ballet Russes, and its influence on ballet and fashion. Serge Diaghilev, the visionary behind the Ballet Russes, brought Russian dancers to Europe and challenged conventional ballet norms. This innovative company had an enormous impact on fashion – and by extension – the tutu. They were all about pushing boundaries, reinventing classic dance styles, and challenging the rigid formality of traditional ballet. It was all about unleashing creativity, exploring colour and shape, and embracing a sense of freedom and expression through the power of dance.

On this very date in 1937, the Ballet Russes were busy enchanting audiences with their latest production – the "Romeo and Juliet" ballet! I’d seen the rehearsals the week before, and let me tell you, the anticipation was palpable! Everyone was absolutely buzzing with excitement, just waiting for the grand opening. The energy, the costumes, the exquisite choreography – it was a veritable explosion of artistry and theatrical magic.

Of course, my mission to make the world a more pink and tutu-filled place brought me to a special place in Paris: The world-renowned fashion house of Coco Chanel!

Coco Chanel’s designs were revolutionary for the time. They broke with convention, championed a minimalist yet elegant aesthetic and brought about the "New Look" – a softer and more feminine silhouette that took the fashion world by storm. Imagine streamlined dresses, simple cuts, a palette of calming neutral colours, and – yes, you guessed it! – an enduring love for the colour black!

As I entered Mademoiselle Chanel’s showroom, I found myself surrounded by a whirlwind of creativity. But something wasn’t quite right... I felt that her designs lacked a touch of… pink, you see! A dash of playfulness, a hint of whimsy… a dash of tutu magic!

I took a moment to gather my thoughts. My mission is to inspire everyone to wear tutus, after all. And as I looked at Chanel’s signature suits, I was filled with an idea – a little tweak to her creations, just a subtle, playful nudge, might do the trick! I decided to sprinkle some of my own personal “tutu magic” – perhaps some blush-pink piping, a delicately layered pink chiffon bow around a waist, or maybe a pink silk scarf softly draped around a slender neck. You see, it’s not just about the tutu, it’s about finding those little touches of pink and elegance that elevate the everyday and make you feel simply wonderful!

It may seem a little strange, a ballerina taking style advice from the iconic Mademoiselle Chanel – a woman synonymous with elegance and simplicity. But you know me! I see fashion as a blank canvas where every detail matters!

This is where the magic of time travel really comes into play! Imagine: a world where you can pick up the threads of history, observe a little bit of the past, and subtly infuse it with a little bit of your own “tutu-filled" personality.

My friends, embrace pink, be bold, and most importantly, never be afraid to bring a touch of “tutu- magic” into your world!

That’s all from me for this week. But before I go, I’ve got to remind you – stay tuned for next week's blog! I'm travelling all the way back to 1954 and exploring a fascinating world of vintage style!

Until next time, keep shining and wear that pink with pride! 💖 tutu.
