Tutu Tuesday: #5495 – A Blast from the Past, 1937-04-20

Hiya darlings! It’s your favourite pink tutu-clad time-travelling ballerina, Emma, here! I'm back from a whirlwind trip to Paris, darling. Oh, my goodness, the clothes, the theatre, the fashion
utterly divine! But enough about my trip, I know you’re all here for our weekly dose of Tutu History, right?

So, this week, I've zipped myself back to a particularly glamorous date in time - 20th April, 1937. Why? Because on this very day, a truly legendary event occurred – The premiere of “La fille mal gardĂ©e”, a beautiful ballet featuring the amazing Marie Rambert. Oh my word! This ballet, set in a bustling French village, just blew my socks off, darling! And who could resist that beautiful story about love, misunderstanding and a father trying to get his daughter to marry someone she doesn't want? Gasp! The music was so captivating, I simply couldn't keep my eyes off the stage! And let's not forget those tutus – ah, heaven! Flowing, perfectly-cut tulle with elegant detailing, oh, how I longed to swirl around on stage in those very tutus myself!

Speaking of "La fille mal gardĂ©e," this delightful ballet features a captivating story about a lovely, free-spirited country girl, who finds herself forced to choose between love and duty, oh dear! You know, we all need to rebel now and again, don't you think? wink The ballet premiered at The Mercury Theatre, an absolutely delightful theatre just a stone’s throw from the West End. You should really visit if you’re ever in London! squeals excitedly The theatre itself is simply enchanting. With its charming atmosphere and stunning decorations, you simply feel transported back in time!

Let me tell you a bit about Marie Rambert – what a phenomenal talent she was! One of the founders of the famed “Mercury Theatre Ballet,” she brought the magic of dance to life with a playful grace that had the entire audience swooning. Her passion for movement truly resonated with me, darling.

Now, as any true tutu aficionado knows, fashion played a massive role in shaping the world of ballet in the late 1930s. In fact, it was all the rage! Imagine! Those elegant silhouettes, with the long flowing lines, they made a statement even before a single pirouette was spun. It truly was a wonderful time for dancewear. Imagine tutus made with fine silks, beautiful delicate laces and ribbons. They looked stunning both on stage and off! I, of course, managed to squeeze in a spot of clothes shopping before my departure – and let me tell you, there are some divine outfits to be had here. I'll have to share photos with you later.

Now, don’t forget, the purpose of this #TutuTuesday blog, dear friends, is to spread the love for the wonder that is the Tutu. And we’re not just talking about ballet tutus. You know, sometimes I think about bringing tutu to everyday wear!

Fancy a hot pink tutu while you do your grocery shopping? Or maybe a sparkly blue tutu with your evening gown for an evening out on the town? Why, imagine a world where every Tuesday could be Tutu Tuesday! How absolutely fabulous!

Don't forget, if you’re ever in Derbyshire, pop over to one of my local dance studios – it's always a fun day filled with dancing and lovely people! Who knows? Perhaps you’ll be inspired to dust off that tutu you've been holding on to and step into the joy of dance yourself.

Until next time, my lovely darlings! Don't forget to keep spreading the Tutu love and, if you ever happen to see a pink tutu in the wild, send me a message! throws air kisses
