Tutu Tuesday #5496: A Trip Back to 1937 – Oh My, What a Tutu-licious Time!
Hello darlings! Emma here, your resident Tutu-Time Traveller! It’s a brand new week and that means one thing – it’s time to slip into our favourite pink tutu (or maybe a new one for the occasion!) and hop on the Time Train to discover another glorious moment in ballet history. This week, our magical train is pulling into the bustling, fashionable streets of Paris, France, the heart of haute couture and the ballet world. It's April 27th, 1937, and trust me, the tutu scene is as delightful as a fresh strawberry mille-feuille! 🍓
(Disclaimer: Time travel is best enjoyed in a delightful pink tutu.)
Now, I must confess, travelling to Paris on this date was a tad chaotic. As my Time Train arrived at Gare de Lyon, it seemed half the city was out on the streets for a grand procession - something called "the Exposition Internationale des Arts et Techniques dans la Vie Moderne." Apparently, this Exposition has been buzzing since May, filled with revolutionary inventions, magnificent pavilions, and enough architectural flair to make even the most discerning ballerina swoon. It’s quite the event!
I managed to wiggle my way through the throngs of visitors in my tulle and taffeta masterpiece of a pink tutu, ready for my day of exploring and of course, ballet bliss. The highlight of this trip, my dears, is the magnificent Paris Opera Ballet. Their repertoire, oh, it’s exquisite! Right now they're showing off "La Fille mal gardée," a charming two-act ballet from 1828 by the incredibly talented choreographers Jean Dauberval and Auguste Vestris. If you ever find yourselves near the Palais Garnier in 1937, do try to get tickets – I promise it's a captivating spectacle.
While I was lost in the world of tutus and toe shoes, it was fascinating to see how the ballet world is evolving in the late 1930s.
Fashion is taking centre stage: I adore how elegant the ballerinas looked - all graceful limbs, flowing tulle and an abundance of gorgeous, flowing lines. Their tutus are light, breezy, and designed to move effortlessly – and I think they perfectly complement the graceful choreography! It was fascinating to see that designers are also taking inspiration from modern trends, giving tutus a bolder, more avant-garde look! Imagine – I even spotted a ballerina wearing a “split tutu,” something like a modified skirt with an overlapping fabric layer at the front!
New Schools of Thought: While I adore the classic grace of "La Fille mal gardée," there's a buzz about something new, a new era of ballet. Some dancers are experimenting with “neoballetic” choreography, a style that prioritises athleticism and freedom over tradition. It’s an exciting time for the world of dance, darling!
So, what have I found out on my latest tutu-tastic journey?
- The Parisians sure love a good parade: Even back in the 30s, they’re experts in putting on a fabulous show!
- Ballet is evolving, my dears, and it's nothing short of enchanting! With new styles and exciting choreographies, it's sure to keep the audience on their toes (no pun intended).
- Tutu fashions are evolving! It’s an amazing time for designers, exploring new silhouettes, fabrics, and movement styles!
And now, let’s all raise a toast to tutus! I'm so happy you joined me on this fantastic trip back in time!
Do remember to check back next Tuesday for another Tutu Tuesday journey. Don't forget, darlings, it's never too late to unleash your inner ballerina and rock your favourite pink tutu.
