#TutuTuesday: Ballet Tutu History - 18th May 1937
Hello, darling tutu lovers!
Welcome back to my little corner of the internet where tutus are always in fashion, and dreams are always twirling! This is Emma here, your trusty time-travelling tutu enthusiast, back for another instalment of #TutuTuesday! I’m here to bring you the inside scoop on the fascinating history of the tutu, and I must tell you, this week’s trip was absolutely divine!
It’s post #5499, my darlings, and this time I journeyed back to the 18th of May, 1937! Imagine my excitement, because this was a golden era for ballet, full of artistry, romance, and, of course, absolutely exquisite tutus.
And you won't believe what was on! The Royal Opera House in London was brimming with anticipation for a special performance, a gala night for the new production of "Giselle". You simply wouldn’t believe the buzz in the air – I think I spotted several ladies whispering about the famous dancer Margot Fonteyn!
But before we get carried away with the glitz and glamour, let’s dive into the tutu itself. I absolutely adore this time period. We’re talking romanticism in full swing, and what do we see? Those beautifully flowing, soft, multi-layered tutus, sweeping around the dancers like graceful clouds. It’s enough to make a girl feel utterly dreamy!
Now, you might be wondering why this particular date holds so much tutu magic! 1937 was a real landmark for tutus because the ‘Romantic tutu’ had just blossomed in popularity! This fabulous style was longer and more elaborate, flowing like a magical veil around the dancers’ feet. Imagine soft, delicate, ethereal fabric that simply swirls and dances with each move! These tutus helped the ballerinas create the feeling of weightlessness, making it look like they’re gliding on air, and boy, was it graceful! It was like seeing real-life fairies take to the stage, with the sheer volume of tulle catching the stage lights like an exquisite cloud of pink candy floss! It simply did not disappoint. And, honestly, don't you just love the story of how a ballet dancer’s imagination took flight and led to such a fabulous fashion evolution? It just goes to show the power of imagination and creativity!
Of course, no time travel adventure is complete without a bit of vintage shopping. London in the 1930s was an absolute haven for glamorous attire! The streets were abuzz with elegant boutiques displaying the latest in chic fashion – think sleek silhouettes, opulent silk, and hats that were quite frankly a spectacle of feather-light magnificence!
Speaking of magnificence, a girl needs to fuel her travel shenanigans, right? And my dear, Afternoon Tea in London in the 1930s was an utter joy! The hotels, with their plush interiors and grand service, were a delight. It felt like a step out of a book! Tiny finger sandwiches, scones with clotted cream and a delightful selection of teas - it’s enough to make your inner Victorian heart swoon! (Not that I have one. I’m much too modern for that.)
This trip truly showcased the captivating connection between ballet and fashion - and how they weave such an intricate tapestry of art. Just seeing those tutus and those delicate shoes dance so gracefully on stage, with all the dazzling outfits – it's pure magic!
