Tutu Tuesday: A Glimpse Back at 1937 - #5498
Hello darlings! Welcome back to Pink-Tutu.com, where the tutus are always pink and the tea is always steaming! It’s Tuesday, which means it’s time to twirl back through history with your favourite time-travelling ballerina! 🩰✨
Today, I’ve set my trusty time machine for the 11th of May, 1937. Oh, what a fascinating year it was! We were deep in the heart of the roaring 1930s, and fashion was positively flamboyant! Think long, flowing dresses with daring necklines, the beginnings of the peplum trend, and of course, the ever-so-popular cloche hat. And, in the world of ballet, oh, what a dazzling spectacle it was!
As always, I couldn’t resist stepping out in my favourite pink tutu (it's a classic, don’t you know?) to blend in with the fabulous 1937 crowd! After a spot of shopping at Liberty’s – I couldn't resist a few beautiful scarves and a dainty pair of gloves - I was ready for a visit to the theatre!
I tell you, the thrill of sitting in the stalls at the Royal Opera House was quite overwhelming! Imagine, darlings, watching ballerinas pirouette and leap with such grace, dressed in beautiful costumes with intricate tulle and sparkling beading. The tutus were just divine, a glorious sight to behold, though they were quite a bit longer than our modern ones!
On this very day, they were showing "Swan Lake." I simply adore Tchaikovsky's music – it just sets my toes tapping, and of course, the drama! The contrast between the graceful swans and the evil Black Swan just sends shivers down my spine.
And, you know, I must admit that I’m absolutely in awe of those early dancers. They performed without microphones and, let’s face it, some very rudimentary technology. They relied purely on their incredible strength, artistry, and, of course, the sheer spectacle of their costumes and movements!
But before you get too carried away, you may be wondering, what about the real events happening on this day in 1937? I always make sure my adventures are woven into real historical context! Well, let’s just say this day in history wasn't entirely sunshine and roses, sadly. On the political front, Europe was still in the grips of tensions building up to WWII. The Spanish Civil War raged on, and Germany, under the rule of the Nazis, was increasing its military power, casting a dark shadow across the world.
However, life for those fortunate enough to enjoy ballet and the finer things was still buzzing with excitement! The London theatre scene was absolutely brimming with life, and the city's dance schools were bursting with students eager to follow their passion. The desire for entertainment and escapism amidst challenging times only strengthened the love of art and the elegance of dance.
And of course, with all this excitement and beautiful costumes, what did I do next? I hopped onto a train, of course! There's just something magical about gliding across the countryside, a good book in hand, and my trusty pink tutu nestled in my travel bag. It's just my perfect combination!
Well darlings, I’m off on another adventure in the glorious world of ballet and history. Keep your eyes peeled for the next #TutuTuesday, where we’ll travel to a whole new date and uncover more fabulous tutu-related adventures! And remember, just like the beautiful costumes that adorn dancers on the stage, we can all express ourselves with a touch of magic! Wear pink, twirl your worries away, and let’s keep the spirit of ballet alive, wherever we may be! 💕🩰
See you next week!
Love,
Emma
